Guys and gals, she runs! After a few initial difficulties I found that the Bowman 300 I bought at STIA had a deformed heat shield. 20 minutes later, off she went!
I'm a happy Moose!

Thought you might like that Steve
All 5 wicks are going, but at a VERY low flame, barely above the burner tubes. It ran for about half an hour before I took it off the track. _________________ Sight to the blind

Any chance of a photo of this heatshield?
Neither of my 234s have heat shields and now you have me wondering if they should. |
Tony, I'll take a picture later, but the 234 doesn't have 'em. Just the 300 and the 265, to prevent the paint burning off the "tanks" _________________ Sight to the blind

Indeed
When I first got my 234 I tried to fit some baffles to prevent the flame scorching the sides of the boiler, but then found out that it wouldn't run - it needs the chimney effect. That was also the reason my 300 wouldn't run....the heatshield had warped and was flush with the boiler, so the hot air couldn't circulate around it. _________________ Sight to the blind

Just started to degrease the worst of my 234s in preperation of me stripping the paint and repainting it.
It seems someone went to the effort to remove all the old paint and then gave it 2 or 3 coats of primer and then gave up and reassembled it
I hate modern paint as it doesn't strip as easily as old paint.
Old green and red meccano is dead easy to strip you drop it in a bucket with caustic soda and come back 30 minutes later and the paint has all dissolved. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

Are you going to repaint them? I'd be interested to see what colour scheme you're going to use. Apparently the 234 came in a number of schemes, GWR, LMS and also an all-black version. They're fantastic looking beasts, it'll be a cold day in hell before I part with mine. _________________ Sight to the blind

Yes going to paint them. As neither have any original paint on them and one is in primer grey they are both screaming to be repainted.
The chassis, cabin roof and smokebox I will be painting with gloss heat proof paint same as the original scheme and one will have the rest painted green but will probably use the left over paint from my Lady Anne rather than buy another colour closer to the original.
I'm undecided about the second one yet but leaning towards a maroon colour.
Need to order my parts this week so they arrive around the same time as I finish repainting. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm
