It's been a while since I've been on the forum. Recently started my first full-time job, 40 hours a wee, which means way too little steam time

Jsut today I piced up on restoring this engine. I recently got some spare parts from mm that I'm really happy with
Everything is now polished and painted, and ready to get back together, only I ran into one problem

The tube to the cylinder was soldered onto the boiler, where the union nut should be. I desoldered it, and got rid of as much solder as possible, and tried to get the nut onto it. Unfortunatly I can't get it on since there's still a little bit of solder on the place where the nut should go.

Any idea how to get rid of it?

Hmmm not much you can do, maybe get some minature files or maybe a small nail file or soemthng to try and remove as much as you can. Is the solder actually on the thread? Trouble is if you heat it up too much the thread could de-solder

Yes, it's on the thread itself. I might try to use the dremel with the metal brush on it, or if that doesn't work just get the pipe back on without the nut

You may have to de-solder the thread with solder in it, and start again. Heat the thread up, to melt solder, then use wire brush to get it out.
Wear appropriate face shield, gloves, and thick shirt though.

If you are willing to do that, try this first.

Fill boiler with water, completely to the top. Leave out safety valve, but fill with overflow plug in

Then try heating the thread, and use dremel brush as above. With water on inside of boiler, touching solder there is virtually no chance of it de soldering

I did this with my "fake" SE2. SE2 boiler, with SE1 base. Naturally with incorrect steam pipe, it was never going to seal. So I soldered pipe in, then put union nut on.
The water meant the thread wouldn't desolder. Water spits and so on a little though, and it took a little more heat, but worked. At least for you, you are removing solder, not soldering

Finalised the restoration job on this engine today

The result:

This restration job took quite some time, as you can see at the start of this thread, I started wonking on it in august.

During the process I found out that there where quite some things that where wrong with this engine:
- a screw in the cylinder
- weird solder job on the engine frame
- extended throttle
- missing union not, pipe directly soldered to the boiler

so what have I done:
- repainted firebox and baseplate (although not everybody was convinced this was neccesary )
- replaced the cylinder with one from mm
- replaced the frame with one from mm
- desoldered the pipe from the engine, and placed the union nut
- a lot of polishing

Todat I putted eerything back together, after testing if the union nut connection worked. I was a bit anxios about it, because the pipe was not soldered onto anything anymore, just the nut there to keep it in place.

The first run was also a test for the black paint, I didn't try it yet before on a meths burning engine. The paint did very well.
The union nut also worked well, only a minor leakage.

After all I am quite hapy with the engine. I't not very original, but still looks quite nice.

A few minor things still need to be done:
- find fake feed for it
- get the whistle working (or get a replacement)
- polish the boiler face some more

yet again another good job. Are you going to get rid of those extensions on the whistle handle and throttle handle? I must say it's nice to have you back erikl The day before you came back I was wondering where you were

I'm still quite busy since I have to work the whole week now, so I won't be here as much as some of you, but I'll keap visiting (and steaming)

Good to hear you'll be doing something about it I can still remember the throttle handle when it had that hideous extension It's nice to know you will be coming back every now and again

It looks really nice Erik!

Glad to see those parts have come in use, and they are well used now instead of on a self in my wardrobe.

If you had mentioned that steam regulator I could have sent you one of them too as I have the perfect one spare

Looks nice all polished, still wish you had kept it original , but it's your engine and you've done another excellent job

A big thank you goes to you for those parts! Couldn't have made it like this without those parts.

Glad to have helped they came from a very rough SE2. The firebox was just rust!, I've still got it too

I only stripped it down because I needed the boiler and whistle for another engine

Great Job erik, it looks great now

I recall I tried to bid, or might have got a bid in near the end on that one.
I know bidding went crazy right near the end though

From memory, yeah think so.It was at around 60, I went to put a bid of 60, but got a "must enter more than 70" message. So in the time I typed in bid, and hit confirm, it went up 10

So I just watched the rest of bidding
