An Edrig in my opinion is about the best 'budget' loco you can get!!! www.thesignalbox.co.uk/?action=showall&cat=42&sid=xfqa9l^wnn2sm43_xlq31h7sheu_qrj4 The bottom one. It's £400 though a super great Janet is £387.50, and I'm sure the Edrig's a better model at the end of the day. Not that I have anything against Janet. A better description of Edrig here www.brandbright.co.uk/edrig.htm.

William

I thought of an Edrig, but it is too fancy considering I don't have a full garden railway set up. I want something more of a stable mate for my SL1.

If I was going ahead with a garden railway then I would be going Roundhouse Bertie, or Accucraft Edrig.

A budget Janet is £300, then I can upgrade in time as money or desire allows. Anyway, I think the decision will be an MMS saddle tank, as even if I can't upgrade safety valve I will still be able to run it on meths, and it will use some rolling stock without modification. It will be a few years I expect before rethinking a garden railway then I can go the roundhouse/accucraft route.

Mixed reports so far.

Chap on Low Cost Garden Railways Yahoo group says yes you can upgrade MMS saddle tank. Alan at PPS says no you can't.

I hate getting contradictory opinions!

It depends what's underneath that dome at the cab end. But you could definatley fit a saftey valve which comes up through the hole in the tank. Though I'd recomend that you modify the tank as done here http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/...den_Railways/photos/view/300c?b=4

Which would be fine on an ebay bargain...but this would be new.

I can see no good reason why a safety valve can't be fitted. Might look a bit strange sticking out but still.

I could have got a Lexus instead of a Toyota.

I could have got a wife with longer legs.

I could have gone on holiday to Italy instead of the Isle of Wight.

I could have bought a house with four bedrooms instead of three.

I could have got a Mercer instead of a TE1a.

I could go on, but I think I have made my point.

I just ran my SL1 in the garden, grinning away as the little fellow trundled around. I wouldn't have smiled any more with any different engine. Now what shall I spend that £200 on that I didn't waste on an Edrig?

Glad you all see where I am going from.

I could afford an Edrig. I could afford a small army of them. I was even tempted to buy one...then I realised I don't want one. If I ever build a proper garden railway then I will want one or a roundhouse or two.

I want a cute little loco that makes me smile. I don't even expect it will be as good as the SL1 I've already got, he runs really sweet now, and that was about £70.

I'm fairly sure I can fit a better safety valve to the saddle tank, but not a water top up, so runs will be limited to a tank full of water, so about 20 minutes. My face aches if I smile for more than 20 minutes in one go!

If you keep going at this rate Chris, we'll need a poster of the century award

Aye! that's what I love about them! they put a smile on your face, even the bank managers!

Countless people at STIA just loved them and it was great to see how facinated people were

If you can get an uprated safety valve in there you should be fine. The Water top up valve is good, but not as useful as the uprated valve IMO

I'm getting quite passionate about these little mamod (MSS) locos you know!

Maybe one day I will be brave and buy a munter to do up and fit all the upgrades.
