For a derusted model im seeing a heck of a lot of rust! All is not well in the firebox - both the slide and its holder are full of rust as is the clip that holds the boiler to the firebox!

Welcome back Tarby, I hope the rust isn't too serious and can be treated.
Keep us informed with your progress.

Thanks guys! Just got the nitromors on the paint and am seeing a little rust under where the firebox goes. Not too bad but glad i found it as the primer used didnt look up to much. Rust appears to all be treatable tho may consider buying a new burner coz its gonna take forever to get off!

Thanks G-J. Yup more or less back to normal now.

On a different note, my simple respray has turned into a job involving rust remover and body filler!!!!! Some very bad pitting on base. Mind you, when i went to the motor factors for filler i was able to get a better colour match on the paint in the bargain bin for 99p

This is now turning into a full restoration unfortunately all the more fun doing it but is gonna take a while. Have also discovered quite a bit of solder at the base of the end cap on the boiler and the inside is all gunked up (as where the pipes) with green sludge. Looks like its gonna need a good clean out. Is the perspex onthe sight glass usually pretty badly cut or is it supposed to be perfectly round?

H'llo, Tarby! The glas should be perfectly round-cut, no chips. If there are, then it's been opened. You can get a new glass directly from Wilesco, it comes together with the necessary sealing washer, screws and nuts. You might also forget trying to de-rust the burner tray and its holder. Tried that on my D16 - not worth the effort; material is too thin, it kinda falls apart. Order it directly from Wilesco, works like charm, and isn't too expensive.

Hi toxx

How do you place an order with wilesco then? Is it a matter of sending an email or is there a dedicated site? The sight glass in my d10 looks like it been cut with a hacksaw from perspex!!!! Not too confident in it, and the seals all look a little old anyways. Managed to sort out the holder with kurust but the burner itself is a lost cause probably. Everything else is covered in red oxide primer at the moment having been derusted and filled where necessary. off on holiday for a week tonight so it can cure away while im off!

EDIT: Sight glass is glass!

Got back at this again and after yet more filler and more red oxide primer and lots of sanding I am finally getting somewhere! Just put on a coat of white cellulose primer then its the painting time.

Painting is about 80% done. Only problem is I cant find my hi-temp lacquer! Base is looking really well using 99p bargain bin paint and I have also resprayed the condenser tray and the engine base. Think I'm gonna have to do the flywheel as well as it looks really old compared to the rest. Just waiting on the black parts drying now and wilesco getting back to me about parts! Still not convinced with the sight glass and want a new burner slide!
