I have a small square of leather for gripping hot parts of an engine (eg safety valves). Probably the most useful thing I use when running my engines. I also use it for adjusting the speed on the locos.

Chris, great idea! I might try that.

Yes! That`s a great idea.

Far less damaging than pliers.

get real leather though because some of the fake types can melt on touching the hot part

A good shaking & spinning while most of the water evaporates.
When it`s cooled I give it a shot of WD40 inside the boiler, engine and all over the outside too. The screw in bits are then stored in a zippy plastic bag with the engine & burner.

Works for Me!

I really wouldn't recommend that unless you plan to thoroughly clean the inside of the engine with a solvent before use.

WD40 is horrendous stuff when it is heated; it turns into a black tar-like material that will quickly block small steam pipes or create a sticky piston

I just do my best to get all the water out whilst engine is still hot.

Then leave S/V, whistle, and overflow plug out.

If I am decomissioning an engine for display I tilt it up so any water gets to one end, then feed a small piece of string, so it sits in the water.
It acts like a wick, and draws the water out.

I suggest using a cloth

The last BIG burn i had was when i was about 8. I was driving a mates Fowler BB1 Ploughing engine. Unfortunatley the injector steam pipe was near the top of the tender were you climb in. As i climbed on i grabbed hold of the top og the tender forgetting the steam pipe and S**T that hurt. I had a huge blister on my right hand between my thumb nd my finger.

Hmmm. Yes I`ve heard that.

But after 50+yrs of steaming, and 45yrs of using WD40 or Duck Oil etc. it`s never happened to me.

Guess I need more practice!

I certainly can't remember WD40 in this country 45 years ago!
Even if it was here then, and I really don't think it was, I'm quite sure it wouldn't be the same product that is sold today.

Lat winter I tried spaying some WD40 on the end of the exhaust pipe on the car - thought it might blacken the rust a bit when it burnt off. How wrong was I - It created a huge mess of white, sticky, gooey stuff. I won't be trying that again, nor putting WD40 anywhere near my Mamods!
