MC...live and learn...your slotted burner looks better for it, so you applied your earlier learning well!!

One question...why do you have the tube entering the burner tank so far down...it would seem you could thus not fill the tank more than half way or the meths would flow out of the slots...given it will seek it's own level. Maybe the tin is larger than I realize and half way up is plenty of volume...just looks like it should go a bit further up the side of the tin and let the wick drape down to the bottom.

cheers,
Roger

It is quite far down (further down than I originally intended ) but you might notice from the pictures that the burner tube is not perfectly level and tilts down towards the end (another mistake!), this has the effect of tilting the other end up inside the meths burner so I can actually get quite a quantity of meths in without it leaking out of the tube slits.

I've been doing some more testing this evening and it fires my SP5 engine long enough that I have to keep a careful eye to make sure the boiler doesn't boil dry .

My camera batteries are on charge so should be able do to a vid soon.

Works great. Well done!

My luton burner has a metal prop at the end of the burner tube to keep it level, maybe you need something similar to stop it sloping down hill.

That's in forwards, it doesn't want to run in reverse hardly at all, here's a video showing the difference. Listen to that horrible squeaking noise when it's going backwards...

I think I am going to take apart and see what's going on. Hopefully it just needs running in. The engine has been very badly treated in the past and left to rust But rest assured its got a loving home now.

That's probably a good idea. It would of helped if I had soldered it in level too. It's probably a bit end heavy anyway so the rest would be a good idea. I think the tube is a bit long as the end slits don't burn half as well as the ones closer to the meths tank. I think I've seen pictures of this type of burner with two tubes with the slits at either end. I'd need a square tank to have a go at making one of those.

But I'm quite pleased with myself so far.

Could be a partially blocked pipe.

I've seen it before with SP5's, it's usually the handle. Just keep a note of how that goes on because it can be tricky to put back together once you have forgotten

Good advice.

Spinning the flywheel by hand gives a nasty metal on metal scratching noise so that's got to be part of the problem. But going forwards it just flies along.
