The anoraks only want City of Brum running cos its in the colours they remember, a problem that will disappear once 6233 reappears from heavy general in BR green.
You could argue that Scotsman is a good candidate to keep running, as it has few original parts, so you aren't wrecking anything sacred. If nothing else, the decision to repair the A3 boiler has proved that repairs on that scale are not only possible, they are almost routine in quite a few workshops, showing the skills are still here at the moment. |

I personally would like to see Flying Scotsman finished and returned to steam.I might be biased being a North eastern modeller BR period but really the old girl has to be the most famous steam locomotive in the world along with probably Rocket.I bet if you asked any man in the street world wide they will say Flying Scotsman then probably Rocket. _________________ I don't know where I've been but I know where I'm going -I think!

Problem is to keep her running there's going to be less and less of the original of what is a very important historical artefact. Rocket, Lion etc are all stuffed and mounted and for a very good reason - to preserve them for future generations. Flying Scotsman is unique - the sole A3 in preservation - to preserve her for future generations means not running her! Otherwise what future generations will see is a facsimile. Railways preservation is about that, PRESERVING the past for future generations. Keeping something running is by its very nature destructive. _________________ "Freedom is the right of every sentient being. 'Til all are one" |

And long may she remain so.
The problem is, is that many "prservationists" and steam enthusiasts simply do not understand the issues surrounding artefact management, conservation and preservation. A steam locomotive like 103 is subject to the self same rigorous discipline of conservation as any other museum object....or, should be. Sadly most locomotives and rolling stock arent.
I was outraged at the East Lancs Railway who have two Coronation Scot coaches which were converted to departmental use in the 1950s. instead of recording the coaches are they are now and dismantling the thing piece by piecem archaeologically they just gutted them taking out what they thought was an addition to get back to the "origial". Complete and utter vandalism. So very amateurish! It shouldnt be allowd without a full watching brief and due recognition or archaeological and historical process and implementation strategies for conversation and material removed. _________________ "Freedom is the right of every sentient being. Exactly the point why more replicas should be built these days. It would never bother me if I could only get to drive/ride on replicas.
Its still coal fired steam to me, thats why I have just bought my third coal fired engine. I can never get enough of the smell of a coal fire _________________ IF IT'S TOO LOUD, YOU'RE TOO OLD

I am perfectly prepared to go down the bookies and put a bet down that it will fail within its first year in traffic, probably with boiler problems.

Now Ian Riley has the old girl, she is in particularly good hands, when was the last time that one of his Black 5's sat down on the main line?
The boiler is almost new, just I believe the boiler barrel is original the rest is new. Pressing for the boiler were done by Pridhams, (is the guy who works there still a member here?) and the boiler constructed by Rileys. Tornado's boiler has done very well has it!
Scotsman is an important locomotive and probably the most famous one in the world. It is dual braked to enable it to run at heritage lines and will be a huge draw at events. The amount of money that it will bring to the railways is potentially huge. _________________ www.mfsteam.com the home of the MFtwin and replacement spares for Bowman, Cyldon and Mamod Steam Engines
