This engine will be my next spruce up job.
The main jobs will be the making of a chimney and the polishing of the aluminium base and firebox.
I tried quickly polishing a corner of the base and I've every reason to be optimistic about achieving a good finish.
I've no intention of stripping this one down so all polishing will have to be done with near enough everything in situ.
Here are some before pics.

That's interesting stuff Sandy. Mine's in bits at the moment. I had to dismantle it because the firebox was more mangled than yours and I thought it would be easier to straighten out if it was in pieces. I'm going to put it together with small nuts and bolts for now, but I can always re-rivet it when I find some suitable rivets. I've polished aluminium bits and they look pretty good... but I'm sure it won't be as shiney as yours! |

| If that's going to be a shiney, I don't like the material the base is made out of, better get my sun glasses....... |

Well I managed to order my brass tube from EKP supplies for the chimney, plus a bit more for later.
Looks like I'll get started on the clean up tomorrow. _________________ Ouch! Where's the burn cream

| I'm looking forward to seeing it Sandy, especially since I'm in more or less the same position with my 13/3. Tonight I've been trying to make a safety valve for it, and I need to make a chimney too. |

Got my brass tube today.
Great service from E.K.P. I only ordered it on Monday afternoon.
No excuses now. It's all systems go. _________________ Ouch! Where's the burn cream

I made my first chimney today.
It's not as good as Steves, but at the second attempt I got a passable one.
It's not as easy as Steve makes it look, but practice will make a difference. _________________ Ouch! Where's the burn cream

I'll bet it was better than my first attempt! I think its best not to cut the chimney to the correct length until you're happy with the flared top... that way if it's no good you can cut it off with a pipe cutter or saw and you've only lost a centimeter or so of tubing. I did one tonight for my 13/3, and I found that I had to bend the clip slighly to make it fit because the brass tubing I used was probably a heavier gauge than the original, so the inside diameter would be a bit smaller. |

You're right Steve. I didn't cut to length on the second one.
I had to bend the clip a bit too.
I'll have to find something a bit better than my ball peen hammer for flaring though. I found it very difficult to flare evenly with it. My first attempt was really far off to one side.
Still, I got an acceptable effort at the second attempt and it's certainly better than no chimney at all.
Just as an edit. I've ordered a pipe cutter ,as it's difficult to hacksaw really square which helps considerably when flaring. _________________ Ouch! Where's the burn cream

| Yes, a pipecutter makes a much neater job of it. As you suggest, success depends on having a hammer or some other bit of metal of the right shape. I'm always on the lookout now for suitable things to use! |

I was back in the workshop today still working on polishing the base and firebox.
Steve. Did you use any particular metal polish for the aluminium, or just normal Brasso.??
I'm struggling to get an acceptable finish. _________________ Ouch! Where's the burn cream

Brasso liquid is for most types of metals should be ok for the base Sandy _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

I used Tcut first, as an experiment, then finished off with Brasso wadding. What's unacceptable to you will probably dazzle the rest of us! |
