A meccano pulley will not fit on an SE3! I've tried several

There we go . . . So I need to start drilling!!

Yup i'm affraid so!

The thing is, the SE3 crank is much, much thicker than a Meccano axel.. so You will indeed have to drill a bigger hole to put one on

I need to do it myself, so I can test that dynamo again

I'm Learning something here.

I forgot about the MEC1 Mike. That will definitely take all Meccano pulleys.
My guess is SE2' and SE1 axles will be a meccano axle size.

Well I really hope so anyway

Best check . . . .

1950s Mamods had much thinner axles/crank shafts.

Managed to shoe horn a sprocket onto the crankshaft of the SP5. Had to drillit out to 5mm, instead of the Meccano standard of 4mm. The sprocket was then filed at both ends to aid the tight clearances needed! All the securing nuts were changed to grub screws - the tolerances are that tight. With a bit of luck I may graft the crane onto the SP5 and have the engine connected by chain - which will not slip like a belt, but allow me to mount another sprocket lineshaft on the crane, whilst using the holes infront of the engine plinth to secure everything onto. Just about impossible to get a cog on there and take a drive off it - nothing to bolt onto.

Got my eye on a few MM - it took me 3/4 hour of tinkering to get it right. I had to make sure that I leave room for the chain too! The flywheel now has about 1-2mm clearance on the LHS when viewed from the top.

That's close, but the pistons should hold her straight . I wonder what you will be able to lift with that beast?

An SW1 - I have not had a chance to steam the engine with the new cord on it - willtry over the weekend perhaps, really a need a ton of Meccano to build an entirely new one on the SP5 - but that's going to cost a packet.

Yes, you can never have too much of the stuff if you ask me!. You never know when you need a small part which you just might have tucked away somewhere.

I bet building this new SP5 crane will take a while!

I got the Gears Set B for Christmas probably in 1965 or 1966, and I've still got it. It looks exactly like those eBay pictures except that the box lid (the only thing I've lost) was different. Its a very useful set... goodness knows how many things I've made with it!
