I was doing some searching on the forum recently and it appears i'm not the first person to look into separate condensers for toy engines:

One factor to remember is that the more vacuum that you pull with your condensor, the greater your cooling coefficient needs to be, because steam stays steam at much lower temperatures in a reduced pressure environment!

I wasn't on the forum when Reid was posting, but have enjoyed reading his old posts. It seems that he always had some neat project going on.
