It really does matter what you put into the firebox for burning : Coal has a big advantage as it smells better than any other fuel, but oil stinks ! Maybe that was the reason for the Conversion ! I like the loco and her livery.

Looks to be running really well. I didn't realise she was oil fired to start I thought Lyd was a new name. Weren't the originals Lew, Taw and Exe? |
I just assumed she was using another name from the class because she always gets referred to as a replica.
If shes not imitating another member why is she referred too as a replica and not a new member like Tornado is? _________________ "Between them lay the silent, grey iron-clad Thunder Child." |

I think she's basically a copy of "Lew" with a few subtle changes so she can fit through the tunnels on the WHR. I don't know if this classes her as a replica or not. Its probably a debate that could rage forever _________________ Dave |

I thought it incorporated various modifications based on faults with the originals and to make it more efficeient and "21st-century steam" and all that. _________________ "Freedom is the right of every sentient being. 'Til all are one" |

Correct! and also someone else mentioned about the reason for changing to coal, is really didn't perform on oil well at all! It struggled with 9 carrs and had to have a blow up at every possible moment
As for which fuel smells better, on the FfR I actually prefer the smell of oil, as the coal we use smells bloody awful, it's got all sorts of crap in it so the smell of oil is much better personally! |

At least welsh anthracite coal smells well. I never like the smell of oil when it comes to locomotives . Even the well known german oilburning BR 12-1066 pacific loco doesn´t smell right.

Well, today I finally had my chance to fire Lyd after going round double heading with it all week with Taliesin Here's a little run through the day:
1st trip:
Double heading with Taliesin with 7 carriages, steamed beautifully and ran with the dampers shut all the way
2nd trip:
Taliesin was taken off and an extra carriage was put on, so it was the longest train Lyd has hauled so far solo. We left Penrhyn 10 late (a mistake on my part, I didn't have the fires prepped well enough at Porthmadoc. Going throughout the trip was my most intensive coal firing trip I've ever done so far and the digital thermometer in the smokebox read 425 degrees C as we hurtled into Moelwyn Tunnel with both feeds on to keep it quiet and made the summit with plenty of water
All I can say is, it's an effing good loco! I'm on it again later on today again double heading with Taliesin with 9 carriages, but there's a hint Taliesin may be taken off on the second trip......
I'll let you know how it goes if that does happen!
Happy New Year! |

The name Lyd caught my eye in the title as as Lydford and the river Lyd is only a couple of miles away from me and the Lew is 1/2 mile away.
It seems the Lyd made a guest appearance at the Launceston Steam Railway a while back. Any plans to return? _________________ Cheers

| It did make a trip down there, and also the Lynton & Barnstaple railway as well. As far as I'm aware, there isn't anything planned as of yet, but no doubt in the distant future it'll return at some point! |

That lead in video is one of the very best short rail videos I've ever seen.
Lyd certainly is one stout little steamer! _________________ Are we having fun yet?

As the LSR is Lyd's "second home" a return visit is certainly on the cards but no dates have been discussed yet - although potentially it could be as early as this autumn. However it is more likely one of our Hunslets will be visiting North Wales first.
