I made the end cap for the cylinder today, It wasa little fiddly to make but I got there.
First I turned the diameter of the bore,
Then I turned the diameter of the part that will fit into the recess,
I cut the material in half and worked backwards facing the length.
I purposely left and overlap on the length of the end cap I was going to make it flush but I decided against it. I put a taper on the cap too.
Here is the finished article:
And fitted on the cylinder.
I'll have a go at soldering it at the weekend, enough work for one day!

No worries Dennis, I don't take cuts while taking a photo. And I take them fri. Further than it may seem. I resize and crop some of th photos to 'zoom' them in more.
I also like the look of metal while it's spinning, just personal preferce _________________ Regards,

I soldered the cap on today,
And out of curiously I polished it too!
Now I've neely finished the cylinder, I've just got to drill and tap the hole for then trunion pin. It needs to be M3, I got a set of taps for Christmas, but I wouldn't trust a tap as small as that from the set!
So I need to buy a high quality tap and drill, I've found a 3mm tap, it's a reduced to £3 would it be okay just to get a plug tap?

It's impossible to start a thread with a plug tap. You'll need a taper tap to start the thread, a 2nd to do most of the cutting and (for a blind hole) a plug to finish. The set should include all three types for each size. Tapping into brass should be fairly easy so use the set. It's pointless having a set if you don't use it. You can replace individual taps as and when necessary. This shouldn't be too often if you're careful. _________________ Regards

That's confusing (for me). They must make taps completely different in England.
Sounds like you need a second tap if you only plan to buy one, Ross. _________________ Filled with a vacuum...

Ross, instead of assuming you can or can't trust any tool you got, perhaps you should try it out on a piece of scrap equivalent to the piece you're working on? _________________ Et in Arcadia Ego |

What I understand as a plug tap is one intended to cut right down to the bottom of a blind hole, with no taper and with a completely square end. The only way you could start cutting a thread with it is if the hole was tapered - not a good idea. Maybe you use different terminology your way. _________________ Regards

Okay thanks guys,
I'll do what Petri says, and just try one of my m3 taps on a bit of scrap brass to re assure myself that it won't snap,
its only I don't fancy making that cylinder again because my dodgy tap snapped _________________ Regards,

You can use a plug tap to start you just have to careful use a counter sink to taper the hole a bit, this will center the tap and works every time you just have to be careful not to go to fast. |
