That style stack was used for wood burners. The straight stacks where coal or oil burners. The wood burners would put out more sparks and hot ash so they had a special spark arrester.

I love one to one steam locomotives. Well I love anything to do with steam power.  Had the pleasure of riding in the cap of a few. Here is one of them.

Hmmm. So the spark arrestor is to stop locos lighting fires in dry climates, why didn't Australian locomotives have them? Anyone have any ideas?

The USA Prarie and forrests are the reason for that enormous spark arrestors a.k.a. Diamond smokestacks. Keep in mind that the prarie and the forrests in the USA often had been very dry and to avoid some bushfires these spark arrestors are very important to catch the cinders before they do harm to the environment.

cheers Joe

G'day all

Spark arresters were used on Ozzie locos  but generally consisted of screens and deflector plates in the smoke box. A few locos imported from the USA had balloon stacks.

As has also been said here, there used to be burn offs and ploughings of the lineside to create fire breaks.

Preseerved railways now only run diesels on days of high fire danger and run fire patrol trolleys behind trains at other times of risk. Its quite fun on such a trolley when you see  the tell tale whisp of smoke line side. You pull up and jump out with a knapsack spray whilst others try and get the pump started. Meanwhile the trolley driver has radioed the loco driver so they stop and wait for you the put the fire out. The race is to see if you can put the fire out with the knapsack before the pump starts! When everything is wette down and raked over its off you go again until the next whisp of smoke.

Regards
Ian
