Last weekend I went to Torino to visit Giovanni. Marco, a friend of Giovanni's from Florence and also a steam enthusiast was also visiting. We sailed a small boat that has an unusual boxer engine.
Since the cylinders are 180 degrees opposed the engine does not self start, so it had to be rescued a couple of times.
The small lake lies beneath a demonstration monorail constructed for the Italia 61 expo.
Giovanni's wife cooked wonderful Italian specialties and I we also visited very nice restaurant known for it's Piedmontese cooking.
I caught this video on Youtube last night!! splendid!!! A metal version of a Seahawk?
The engine is very interesting too- a horizontal opposed twin not 4 cylinder?- scratch made?? _________________ Lagniappe readily offered and accepted,

Hi Miles, nice Celia May made from alloy I may have the drawings for that engine but not the boiler
kind regards frazer
I'm sure Giovanni will be please to see your identification of the engine do you recall the bore and stroke measurements Frazer? _________________ miles
Hi Miles, just dug out the drawings Model Boats mag June 1989.
It was based on the Ocle a MAP publication an acronym for open launch engine a single cylinder design. THE heart of the engine is the main bearing as the crank has the ports cut into it for exhaust and admission.
The bore is 1/2 inch the stroke is 5/8 flat twin. The boiler from what I can remember was a twin drum unit along the lines of the small Stuart Turner.Basil designed the engine as he claimed to copy the original was not very feasable for the amateur to construct. If you ever come across the boiler drawings give me a shout as I want to build a Celia May as Basil designed it. He was one of lifes true gentlemen and always kind enough to answer a then newcomers questions
kind regards frazer
The Boiler plans were supposed to be in the July 1989 issue, but the ones that ended up over here were misprinted with pages missing. I wrote to model boats magazine and asked for the complete article but never received a reply. If anyone has the complete articles with the boiler I would like a copy.
Regards,
Gerald.
Looks like Giovanni was lucky, a bit more deeper and...
Nice boat.
I always carry a fishing rod with me. Saves getting your feet wet.
A rescue tug is a lot more fun.
Metal hulls have always intrigued me but the shape always seems difficult to achieve from a flat sheet. _________________ Classic Hobbies

very interesting Frazer, I will keep an eye out for those boilers plans. the displacement of the engine seemed a little too large for the size of meths burner that we were using, I had expected the boat to travel a little faster. I expect a ceramic gas burner would improve the performance. We had some problems with the RC which turned out to be caused by poor reception since the aerial was inside a metal hull. _________________ miles
This was the maiden trip of this launch.
Aside from the usual weeds-in-the-prop problems, being an all metal launch, we had radio problems, the metal hull acting as a Faraday cage, causing problems with the receiver signal. The problem was overcome with a new external antenna holder machined on purpose.

The engine is a very interesting one and my first guessing about its rotary valve (as the Ocle which I had built many years ago) is confirmed by Frazer's comments. _________________ GIOVANNI
