I have ended up with a Gaselan mobil steam engine.    These engines are electric and are wired for 220 volts.
This may seem like a silly question but can I switch the cord cap to fit our American standard 220 volt receps and run the engine?   I would assume that 220V in Europe is the same as 220V in America but without confirmation,  I do not wish to take the chance of smoking a perfectly good heater and burning down my home.

A nice engine that I've never seen before - well found.

Indeed, 220V is 220V anywhere in the world, but I thought the supply in US was 110V?

You had me curious about that so I did a bit of research, this is one opinion that I found:

OK, that makes sense. This means that US 220v has both poles "live" with oposite phase whereas the European 220v has one pole live and one neutral. This should not be a problem PROVIDED that the insulation is in good condition. I would recommend getting it checked out before you fire it up and make sure that the chassis is earthed (grounded).

Taking a second look, it does bring back vague memories. My grey cells are begining to wear a bit thin.

Yes Roly,   Most of what we use is 110V.   Appliances and tools that require more power like clothes dryers etc and larger power tools are wired for 220V.   So we use both.

Alan, besides what Roly mentions about the live poles, our electricity is all 60 hertz, while Europe I think is 50 hz.
I don't know if that matters to a heater.  I know it matters to a motor!

STURDY is an understatement.  This engine is very heavy.

Dean,  from what I have found out,  that is correct.   We operate on 60 hertz in the US and in Europe they use 50 hertz..   I went ahead and wired a 20amp cord cap on the engine and fired it up.  It worked beautifully.  The difference in Hertz did not seem to matter to the heater.   I actually thought it was a little slow getting up to pressure but once it got there.  Wow does this engine run.   Absolutely a tank that gets up to some serious rpm's if you like that but also runs very slow and deliberate.  Quite an impressive machine.  The base casting indicated that this engine was manufactured in August, 1954
