Some before anf after pics of the '48 SE2:

The first 4 are before cleaning. The "after" ones are the ones you need the shades for
I'm still in two minds as to if I should repaint the firebox. It needs it but, so far, everything's original, as far as I can see. _________________ Regards

Roly, great job of cleaning things up...what a bargain that was!!!
Personally I would find a way to mask off the logo and I would paint the red base and paint the firebox. BUT, that's me and my penchant for perfection.
At least do the firebox

That's great Roly, positively gleaming! For what it's worth I'd paint the firebox, though I can see the argument for keeping it original. Either way it's a beauty. |

Looks great Roly!
I'd leave the firebox as it is, I think having that "glowing" and the base as it is wouldn't look right _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

I would have to go withRog on this one Roly.
I had a base with a decal in much the same condition.
With a bit of careful masking with solution and a good matching paint, you can't tell it's been resprayed.

It's funny. 12 months ago I would have immediately gone for the respray without hesitation, because of the rust. Now I'm undecided.
I've removed the rust and wiped it over with an oily rag. That should hold off the rust for a while in a dry atmosphere. If it starts coming back too quickly, I'll probably respray.
If I do go for a respray, I think it'll have to be complete - all or nothing. I agree that with the firebox done and not the base, it'll look wrong. Also, if I do that, I'll replace the feet rather than spray over them! The existing ones, being genuine rubber and old, won't survive removal. One's crumbling already. _________________ Regards

Do not respray the base under any circumstances Roly!
Seriously, it will definatly de-value the engine and it looks great as it is
I think the engine is too valuable/rare and sought after to repaint. Especially as the condition is ok _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

Lovely engine Roly, and a super clean up.
Got to agree, if the rust makes a come back, I too would get the paint out. _________________ Make time to take a step back, and appreciate what you already have. |

Sorry, coming in late on this one. It was one of the threads I lost when I dropped out
Very nice engine Roly.
I would leave it for now, for sure. I can always be done later.
I know you plan on a full respray if you do one, but if it was mine I would only do the firebox, if you plan on running it.
A firebox repainted, will "age" in looks over time, if you steam it anyway.
The oily rag wipe over will protect it well in the meantime..
I once bought a car, that had been stored in a garage for 20yrs since it's last run. Exposed to the salt air of this town too.
It had been wiped over with vaseline on a cloth. It did not have one spot of rust where the vaseline was
But very nice engine mate _________________
