I've finally got the painting done. I've used Hamerite smooth dark green on the firebox and the engine castings, and Hamerite smooth black on the firebox. The red bits are enamel paint. The green is much darker than the original colour would have been, but I've found that Hamerite paint is quite heat resistant, and I can always do it again in the future if I find something better. The seal around the piston rod has been repacked with graphited yarn kindly supplied by Tony Gregory. Thanks again Tony! I haven't steamed it since painting, but I'll give it a run tomorrow and post a video.

Blimey Steve, I'm having a pretty hard time believing that that is the same engine! Nice touch with the decal!

That engine is gorgeous! What a glorious restoration, I am awaiting the video with anticipation.
How rare are these engines and what mind buggeringly large price would I have to pay for one?

Nice one Steve...I quite like the Hammerite look...didn't know it could stand up to heat, must give that a try. _________________ Visit IndianaRog and The Temple of Steam: www.indianarog.com |

Thanks for your comments everyone.
I haven't done anything to the chimney except to wipe off the grime, and I'm in two minds about repainting the black bits. What do people think? The whistle in the pictures is borrowed from my 13/1 but I intend to buy a Mamod whistle, which looks very similar, and modify it to look like a Cyldon.
Syrtismajor: Yes, they are quite rare, and in good condition they're pricey. I payed about £45 for this one, but it was in a sorry state!
Rog: I've used Hamerite smooth black on fireboxes and it seems to resist heat very well. It'll even take direct flame for a few seconds without any damage, as I found out by accident!

Not restoration this, but resurrection - I remember how it looked
Lighting probably not helping but dark green doesn't seem to stand out enough against black but realize you are aware, hence talk of eventual repaint In the meantime I could (very) happily live with present livery
Chimney is tricky. Having painted most everything else, it would seem an OK idea but might further highlight brickwork imperfections I'd probably try attaching some black paper around it first to help judge results............
I'm in the queue, waiting for video.......... |

Steve, if there was a "falling off chair" emoticon, I would use it here.
That's brilliant mate. I remembered what it looked like, then saw the resto, then had to flick back through the thread thinking I had remembered the wrong engine, but I didn't
That is a great transformation. Well done mate _________________

| Thanks Griffin, Wallace, and SG. I agree that the green parts are much too dark and they don't really stand out from the black base. I've got a couple of other types of paint to try so I'll do some experiments on scraps of metal to see how they behave near to a flame. For the chimney I'm pretty sure I could reproduce the brick pattern on decal paper, but I'm not sure how it would stand up to the heat. That chimney gets pretty hot! That's another experiment I'll need to do. |

Hadn't realized you were maybe planning on redoing brickwork too - that is ambitious. How was it done originally - painted on? The decal paper might not resist - experiments are indeed in order. Good luck |
