Someone must know something about it anyway!

Been following this thread with great interest.

Thanks to SteamyJim for sharing his 'prototype loco'.

In the Mamod book the open wagon on the train below MM's photo above is in a light colour (i.e. not grey) with dark lettering.

Thanks MM for advising us what the light colour at the top of the chimney is, as I had also thought it was some brass cap as well (PPS do one for Janet which should fit Mamods as they use the same smokebox assembly).

Some other interesting differences I've noticed: -

1. Boilers. I have what is an early boiler with a silver soldered front end cap. Some boilers were made with screw fittings for the backplate, others had rivets instead. Not sure if a soldered steam pipe at the top of the boiler was done by Mamod, or as an improvement by owners later (MSS do this on their locos).

2. Some locos had the cylinder backplates held on with nuts and bolts at the rear, whilst others had these riveted.

3. Coupling Rings. 2 versions of these, the earlier black round keyring type, and the later silver coloured oval ring.

4. Track. There are 2 versions of the straight and curved track. What I assume is the earlier version with a prominent wood effect on the sleepers and flat top to the tabs, and what I assume is the latter version with two strengthening strips on top of the tabs, and a less apparent wood effect.

Must get my scanner software loaded up at some point.

Chris Cairns.

Thanks for all that Chris. Hope its ok to use some of your text on the website?

I suppose as well as the prototyp of the loco, there must have been prototypes or variations to the rolling stock. I do remember someone mentioned to me years ago that they had seen a tank wagon made by mamod, but they might have beed mistaken.

Its very interesting all the subtle changes over the life time of the product range, and very well observed Chris. Its this sort of knowledge that really adds depth to the topic.

MD

i have a mamod SL1K which is a bit different. It was a kit, but not the standard kind. It was green for a start, and came from PPS. It had uprated wheels, cylinders and a water top up valve supplied (of course this meant the whistle was omitted) as new BUT retained the old reverser valve and safety valve. Unsurprisingly it never worked. Does that count as a rare variant?

It's just an SL1 mate! You could do with shining up the tyres on the wheelsets in the lathe mind, the lubricator has blended in well.

I agree MM, a painted centre with steel tyre is an improvment, the ones on BT's loco I belive are chemically blackend PTLRcecil's super mamod has them, but his father machined the tyre rims to exposed steel. The reason, I don't want to but them under the PoW is 'cos they're not as nice.

no its a kit loco with an SL1 body, but then you could argue it isn't really and is a copy, as the green is darker and the transfers thicker. It was fun to build, but my lord its been a pain to get working. Its actually got your regualator valve on it Billy! I never understood why PPS would bother with painting it in a near correct Mamod livery, and the RTR livery at that. Why not their own? Especially as its not really a Mamod, and has a lot of Jane components. The wheels are blackened as you say, but they've got quite charred
