There is another on Ebay with a $200 starting bid, but no bidders. I believe one went fairly cheap ( relatively speaking ) a short while back. _________________ Your life is an occasion...Rise to it |

Buh... I'm still trying to get that bugger to unblock me so I can bid on it... Still, If Ranger is going to make a play for it, I can wait for the $200 one after it gets relisted to something a bit more sane _________________

There will be more. I sure cant for some time now, but I think I would love to have a twin cylinder. Lots of time before I am in the position to buy more so I will enjoy watching your hunt for one. _________________ Your life is an occasion...Rise to it |

I bought my SR1As reasonable, I paid $79 for one and $89 for the other, both were unfired. I still have to decide if I want to keep both, but the pair does look good on the Mantle Keep your eyes open as they seem to come up on Ebay reasonable all the time.
I also have a SE1A and I have to say it is one of the most fun things to watch, it goes like a demon.
What is it about verticals that fascinate so many? I am of the belief that a horizontal is far more efficient as the heated surface is larger. _________________ Your life is an occasion...Rise to it |

I dunno what it is about the standy-uppys.... Just something different from the norm?
Also don't know about the heat for the electrics, but the Wilesco D455 has a nice big pipe going up the middle of it. First time I ran it I darn near singed the hair off my hands getting too close to that chimney (the pre-gauntlet era..). Of course, heat up the stack is heat wasted, but then you've got the same situation with horizontals and heat wafting rapidly up the sides.
I'm going to do like Tom and get a pressure gauge for a D21 to stick on my 455 (some day). Will be interesting to see what sort of pressure it'll maintain. Of course I've got nothing else that compares directly to it in a horizontal, save for Old Smokey, and his boiler is smaller...
Oh Ranger... If only I had known you were going to fumble that one...
But then I never did get a repsonse from the seller about unblocking me either, so sucks to be him too.
I'm going to hope to snag that one in Ontario instead, provided no daft wully decides to contest it.... darn near overpriced as it is for the north american market, by all recent accounts.. _________________

Well, that's what I used to think, until I got an engine on which the firebox had been replaced by a very tight fitting number where the hot air wouldn't waft up the sides....wouldn't run for toffee until I allowed for air passage....I've since had to remedy a similar problem in a Bowman loco. The flow of hot air around a boiler and in the case of the 455 through the flue makes a huge contribution to the steam raising capacity of the boiler. _________________ Stands the glass half empty,

I agree to that point, the flue makes the 455 more efficient than many Verticals. In fact I will eat my words and say that if I could afford one, the 455 would be a big temptation. _________________ Your life is an occasion...Rise to it |
