Too slowly for my liking Nic,
thanks to Stilldrilling I have 2 bolts and it is straight. But the flywheel is catching on the baseplate- its BADLY bent.

What is? the flywheel or the baseplate. If it's the baseplate, can't you straighten it with a couple of bits of wood?

The baseplate Les, looks like the whole base is buckled. Seems like it was used to stop a car rolling backards. I will sort it, cant let it go to waste

Tom, a suggestion:  find a retired auto body metal man.
Your country still has coachmakers, for gods sake.

They know how to torch and hammer-and-dolly metal back to shape.
That base can be fixed, but not by simply whacking on it.
The metal is stretched.  The metal must be shrunk.
It can be done by a craftsman who you will enlist by appealing to his spirit:
it's a British-made toy of historical value and you will show his work in restoration to the world.

Find such a man locally or through online contacts.
Can be done.  If you want to do it yourself, there are books and probably videos available today online, free, even.

I was never good at the technique, though, so I can't volunteer.

1973:  Wayne, my Navy mate, and I would dig through the junkyard man's stock at liberty,
after months of working there every now and again, helping him put some order into the chaos, paying a few bucks for parts we wanted, sometimes.

South Carolina, out in the sticks, outside of Charleston.
He was a cracker, a hard drinker, a broken down fellow,
old at age forty.

One day we were there digging for junk out in the weeds and palmetto; he said he'd learn us to shrink metal. Come to the shop, now.

We looked at him strangely.  Absurd.  He was sober and serious,
"I'll learn you to shrink sheet metal.  Gimme that fender (wing) from over there.

It was an old and rusty banged-to-hell fender (wing) from some long-gone '40s vehicle.

He "learned" Wayne and myself.  You use a torch, you use a shrinking hammer and dolly, and wet rags,
and you don't carburize the metal and you don't oxidize it neither,
or you're screwed.

Tom, your base is simply miniature work.  Torch, hammer and dolly, grind and fill with lead, smooth, prime, paint.

I never was good at it, the finesse of shrinking metal, 'cos I only did it for one afternoon thirty five years ago,
but the results Wayne and I got under a master's tutelage,
was amazin'.   The junkyard man was delighted that two young punks would even care.
"No-one fixes nothin' no more.  No-one cares no more. It's all Bondo for filler and shit for the finish."

He was isolated and broken in spirit, with a fat, sick wife and two spavined kids.  He liked us.
We quit going there, did our service hitches, and went home to forget poverty and shambled trailer life.

Just found an interesting email deep in the depths of my very full inbox, advising me that he found this in a skip

Whats interesting is that the ship was by a school and all the stuff in there seemed to have come from the school.

Could this be a G&G one

Which joints are silver soldered and are there any other marks that may help. Must say all the cylinder joints look like usual solder, and the whistle is loose, so that solder cant be too strong either
