We have CNC machines in school. Shall only be able to use them for my stuff for 1 more year though as one of the tech teachers whos a model engineer is leaving |
If he's leaving does that mean the cnc stuff will be surplus? Feel free to pass them my way - promise they'll be well used! HEHEH |

This is one of the other projects I was working on - lathe tool storage and milling machine tool storage. Never being able to find the right bit or buying another and then finding I already had one was beginning to annoy....I know it's a bit anal having everything put away in it's place with a label but what the hell!
Just cut from 3mm MDF on the cnc machine again!
I actually made loads of these, for taps and dies, reamers etc too.

Heres the latest progress on the loco! I've cutout the sidetanks and made some progress on the cab. I've also drawn out the footplate, steps and boiler support too. So at least I know how the thing is going to fit together! I think it's starting to look quite handsome!
First Image: Side tank cutout from Brass - Holes drilled for rivets...lots of them too!

Lastly - Back of Cab cutout, pictured alongside a Talyllyn Coach for size comparison.

| yep - I used my machine to cutout the parts for the side tanks. I'm trying to use it as much as possible, probably the only real parts I'll have to make by hand is the smoke box door and the turned parts. Smokebox door will need to be fairly hefty brass and would take an age to machine the curved shape in it. I'll probably step it out into the rough shape on the lathe and then try to file it to the required curve...ample use of emery cloth too! |

I've made most of the cab for the loco now, next step is to work on the chimney and the flared bit around the bottom where it meets the smokebox and a decorative part on the top! I thought I'd finish off the front of the loco to balance up the cab at the back! There's no real logic to making this loco apart from just making the bits as I think of what needs doing!
I've made a couple of drawings for those parts. Now just how best to make them!
I found this on youtube, it's a form tool made using some silver steel or drill rod: http://youtube.com/watch?v=81ukA3iN31Q
Should be good for the radius on the chimney cap. For the flare on the base of the funnel. I'm still not sure how to go about this. One suggestion was this little accessory tool:

A few more pics of the latest additions to the loco!
It's feeling a little more solid now and starting to come together, it's nice to see how the burner will fit in, I haven't really looked at where the various "bits" are going to go - gas tank, radio gear, reversing linkages etc.
Now it looks more like a loco it's easier to get an idea of how much space is in the cab. It's almost as much space as a Roundhouse lady Anne in there! Not quite as wide though! Gas tank should fit alongside the boiler at the front of the cab, with radio gear in a dummy bunker at the rear of the cab, batteries under the roof. Hopefully I "might" be able to fit some minature servos under the floor, and cook 'em up with the gas burner if it gets windy!!
Combustion Chamber made and loosely fitted in place
Combustion Chamber parts
Combustion chamber alongside - paper trial version
The combustion chamber is based around the Mamod part, it's about 12mm shorter as the cab on the loco projects further forward. I've also added an extra side piece to help to protect the burner from the wind and channel the flame a little. On the original loco this is provided by the frames which mate up against the side of the burner. On my loco as the frames are wider I've added these parts. Also the burner sits a little higher than in the mamod and is actually at approx the same level as the footplate. |

You are welcome to the General Arrangement drawing thats pictured in the above images. I'm reluctant to make any plans available -yet as it's not yet a complete loco so some parts will still need to be modified, extra holes for linkages and mountings for gas tanks etc, servo brackets...
..I'd love to make these available so others could build their own version!
Meanwhile...
I wanted to work on another little self contained part of the model. It's satisfying getting a part made, painted and then put aside to be used when the loco is assembled.
A nice little project is making a few lamps for the loco and eventually a little tail lamp for the brake van behind it!
This is a work in progress shot of the brass headlamps. They are based on a British Railways pattern oil lamp. I've yet to make the little chimney on top and the handle.
I've always liked these little lamps from my Hornby days where they were too small to see!

Those lamps are brilliant!
I'd realy love to have a go at building my own version of this loco _________________ Land Of Hope and Glory,

A truly stunning effort on the entire loco but those lamps are magic!
I'd buy some |
