You say that they have been repainted, were the bases red to start with or were they green??? _________________ Les - Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternatives.

They have only been repainted on the top, they are all red originally underneath, sort of rusted but original. _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

| That's a great buy MM. I'm sure you can sort them out! Nice to have three red ones... the green bases seem to be more common. |

I heard that some SELs were fitted with fake safety valves that didn't work but looked like proper ones. Maybe you have one of these? |
Interesting that you mention that. I had two SEL's that had fake valves and though they were something that someone had tried to make as a replacement. Wish I had kept them so I could put up a pic |

What a great buy MM, the Standard looks like one of the very earliest, its nameplate looks more embossed than usual
Also i think the earliest flywheels were all red (though sounds like it may have been repainted ) |

The first picture show a fake safety valve against a proper one, and the second is the fake.

My SEL 1520 Junior had one of those glued up safety valves fitted, and because there is something rattling in the boiler, I had assumed that it was the bottom end of the safety valve. However I've since read elsewhere on the web that these engines were provided with this false safety valve, with the theory that the cylinder will push off from the cylinder plate when there is too much pressure, and release this pressure. If you heat that false valve up you will find it is actually the top part of the safety valve neatly soldered into the body. With a tap (I think 8BA), you can then clean up the threads in the top part of the safety valve and build a functioning version. I'm just waiting for a tap to do exactly that to my false safety valve.
It also looks like the bottom piece of pipework from the lubricator to the cylinder on the 1540 Standard has been replaced at some point.
Good luck with getting some burners. I had to buy a scrap engine in order to get a 2 wick burner.
Les Marsh The two safety valves you show (one original and one from barry1946) are much longer than the valves fitted to my other SEL engines, and I notice they have an 'O' ring fitted between the top part and the body. Again mine do not have those fitted, and my springs are held on by 2 normal hex nuts, and not the circular shaped fitting your valves have fitted. Mooseman had advised me that the top part of the safety valve is actually the same as the piston, which again is true in my engines except for the 1550 Majors which have the slotted pistons. |

One down and three to go.
The little Minor is finished . Nitromors ripped through the paint easily enough, so it was just a case of sand, paint and polish and she's done.
The Junior and Standard are still awaiting the parts......
Will have to wait for the parts to start the standard and junior, it's another out the way anyway
