Wilesco - How to attach a broken drain valve?
Dear all,

I hope you can help me. Right now I'm working on an old Wilesco engine where the water drain valve on the kettle is broken.

What is the best way to attach it? I've already tried soldering with a solder station, JB weld glue (if anyone knows) and some cold welding paste.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Greetings Dennis

In what way is it broken? If the valve itself is broken then you might have to replace it. If it's the bush then soldering is the correct method but a soldering station does not provide sufficient heat. You need a gas torch.

Dear Roly,

thanks for your reply. Broken means that the drain pipe is broken off from the downside of the valve body.

If I use a small gas torch, which solder should I use then?

Thanks

I would use electrical solder (with the built in flux core) or you could use plumber's solder with an appropriate flux. The important thing is, whatever solder you use, the parts to be joined must be clean and free of any tarnish.

With parts that small, I would use a small pencil type gas torch if you have one.

To repair the Wilesco drain valve -
    1) Unscrew the valve from the boiler.
    2) Dismantle the valve. The heat of soldering will destroy the valve seal.
    3) Clean the parts to be joined with steel wool.
    4) Solder the pipe to the valve.
    5) Clean the parts to remove solder residue and flux.
    6) Reassemble the valve and refit to boiler.

Electrical solder and a good flux (e.g. Baker's No. 3) will produced a good joint.
Those who are new to soldering may prefer to use solder paste.

Unfortunately this is not possible, it's a d24 where the valve is soldered to the boiler itself
All I could try is to remove all the parts around (oven door and the plastic handle).

Dear all,

sorry for the late reply. Here is a photo of the broken drain pipe.

Thick gloves and a soldering iron.

Remove if possible the cock itself and use the thick solder in place by melting it with the iron and presto

Dear Petrie,

thanks for your tip.
Seems like soldering is still the best solution.

I'm in contact now with a steam engine friend from Germany that could repair it in summer, let's see how it turns out.

For the moment, thanks a lot for your help. This forum is great
