Is my new girlfriend lying about her age?
Hi
Just picked up this cutie online. I had a wish list for my first SE2. Decent amount of paint left with an ok decal. Wire strap. Old as possible but with meth burner. Steam pipe removable without re soldering. I think she ticks every box!

Anyway, the vendor says he got it new "around 1960 or there abouts". A bit vague for me. I researched it some but can only get the age down to a five year window 1958 - 1963. Can anybody pin it to a specific year? I know Mamod liked to use up whatever was around so I'm not sure if it's a realistic question.

Here are some bad pictures. Looks like the flywheel was brass plated but that has nearly gone. Crank also plated. Burner is red plastic handled and brass plated. Water level plug has a single red handle. Engine frame is screwed down.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
Ben

Hi Ben,

I've got the date of that model  as 1957- 63, which is approx what   you have found out yourself.

What many people do not take into account is that these where expensive toys in their day. They may have spent a long time sat on a shelf in a small toy shop and so the manufacturing date and purchase date could vary a lot.

                       Chris.

Hi Ben, nice looking engine. Looking at the cylinder and long handle throttle (or choke) I think it could just about be pinpointed to 1958.
Put aside pieces were used up, 1960 would probably be too late.

Just for added reference, the flywheel would not have been plated, it would be the lacquer inconsistency or it coming off that may give that look.

Very nice.

Just be careful with undoing the nut at the steam pipe/boiler connection, if you decide to do that. The last thing you want is the threaded part to come loose from the boiler. Same with undoing any fittings from the boiler, if they don't unscrew easily. Don't force them.
Get ready to throw everything you have at them. My steps are usually.
1) Boiling water on the fittings
2) WD 40 or similar on the fittings
3) A combo of the above, and swearing.
4) Vinegar, inside the boiler and the boiler placed so the vinegar is around the fittings on the inside. Leave for 30mins then try
5) More swearing and using blu tack to make a well on the outside around the fitting, fill with vinegar and leave 30mins.
6) Persevering and swearing.

Just rinse the boiler well if vinegar is used. I only use it as a last resort and when you think you have rinsed it all, rinse again

I find the flywheels clean up very nicely with silver polish and it does no real harm

I hadn't thought about that. That would suggest a date earlier than 1960 is possible if that is indeed when it was purchased.

If she's from 1958, I'm very pleased. For the age, the paintwork is very good. Particularly on the fire box where there usually seems to be some loss. She didn't break the bank either.

That's interesting about the flywheel. I had assumed it to be plated as it has a patchy but unmistakable golden hue. I will be removing the boiler for a proper clean, so I'll take your advice. My swearing skills are probably good enough for the job.

One off the best models to have.
The paint and decal is in very good condition, so a good clean and polish should work wonders.

Thanks all. Couldn't be happier with it!
SE 2
I have a SE@ bought in 1958 and it doesn't have any plastic or red paint. I would think your mose is a bit younger maybe '59 or '60. However mine was bought in South Africa so might be a "56 or '57

Interesting.
I want to mount it with the year on the base. It seems I'll have to pick the most likely based on all that everyone has said. It will at least be an educated guess.

Thanks
Ben
