Even does forward and reverse in the same way!

That is brilliant, I thought oscillating cylinders only existed in the world of toy steam.

Oscillators were quite often used in boats, even very large ones. I have a feeling that the SS Great Britain, the first propellor driven iron ship, had oscillating cylinder engines, and they were very common if not the norm for paddlesteamers of the time too.

thought you might like, also heres another one, this time in 7 1/4" gauge. Note the video also.

I wonder on that big engine how good the draughting was. The Ossie cylinders couldn't have really had a fierce blast. Maybe you had to keep the blower on, or the blastpipe was very restricted.

you are absolutely right, they were huge and operated at a steam pressure lower than our Mamods!!! I found a link to a ossie engine that powered twin screws using one cylinder directly coupled to both screws.

That's a very interesting link. The Russian Ice Locomotive must have been an impressive sight.

Yes the SS Great Britain had a 4 cylinder occlisating steam engine. It worked at around 5PSI! The SS Great Britain Museum have recreated the engine, aulthough powered electricly its a great sight to see
