Don't know why they painted all the brass parts with gold paint?
Even the piston assemblies are painted. The frieboxes have an embossed/textured finish, very difficult to clean or replicate.
The lettering on the nameplate is very slightly raised, not sure if you'd get definition on the letters if rubbed back after painting?

The firebox finish is the same as my old MGB dashboard, and you can buy crackle finish black aerosols for their restoration.
Dunno about high temp resistance though!

dunno if you'd get a similar by using a thick coat of vht black & putting in it a very hot oven while still tacky? |

Great tip, Wallace 
I placed my base and the can of paint in the sun for an hour. Didn't think of the warm water trick for the can. It would have saved me some time and gained me more drying time in the sun. |

On my Replica Snipe, the firebox has been painted in that crackled finish. It was homemade by someone in the UK. The paint has held up real well, looks like new.
I had never seen it before. So possibly the off the shelf stuff in the Uk holds up well to heat?

I bought most of my mail order supplies from the MGB Hive. Though any classic car supplier could oblige with a can, I guess.
