It would have to be a very rare german steam engine. A complete Stuart beam engine from the factory costs around £1700 i think.

Doesn't have to be a complete one, just the engine.
Can also be a simple one, doesn't have to have e.g a governor or lubricator...

Mirko, I have a nice one, but love it too much to sell or trade. Used off eBay you can find them for approx. 500 gbp if you look hard.

Mirko, that Stuart Beam looks nice from a fit and finish standpoint...it does have the lubricator, but no governor. I have just the opposite and since I am currently running on air only I can keep it well lubricated without a dedicated lubricator. The governor adds a nice visual touch when running...you can see this on my website where there is a short video.

One thing to notice on Stuart Beams is the degree of machining done, which can increase the cost. The parallel motion parts on this one are all made from square, unmachined stock. NOTHING wrong with that, but on those made by an experienced machinist, the parallel motion parts are usually machined so that they taper at both ends. It is a cosmetic aspect only and may mean this one won't sell for too much, but I would still bet 400+ GBP would be likely end result.

Highly recommended engine...just a joy to watch run.

Roger

Rog, the parralel motion isnt to do with the machinist... it depends on the age of the model. The old ones had square and the newer ones have rounded ones (or the other way round ) well thats what i have been told anyway.

I've heard all the bits of the parallel motion start out as either square or round stock...then they get turned by a machinist. I'm guessing, but I bet if you buy a Stuart factory made piece (or one of their assemble it yourself kits), they use round stock that is not tapered at the ends.

Machinists on the other hand, who buy the basic castings, probably use whatever they have that is closest in size...maybe square stock that will be turned down, maybe round stock that could either be turned or left round.

All I know (being a non machinist)...is there is more work, cost and perceived value in the tapered stock types...but functionally there is no difference. Sort of like buying a wooden clock...it could be a square box or have decorative turnings...the later would impart a perceived higher value since more work went into making it that way.

My understanding of how Stuart provides the parts however is just a guess...I do not know for certain whether they provide them square, turned or tapered...just guessing.

cheers,
Rog
