Been annoying the fine peeps on the facebook forums with my noob questions etc and thought I would spread me wings and come say hello in here.

I came back to steam since the last one I owned which was a SE1 or 2 in the late 70's, I bought it from Beatties in Lewisham and it was my pride until it got broken and I think it just disappeared over time as my mum and dad did their periodic purges of tat and stuff.

I tested the water a short while ago after seeing a very sad MM1 for sale for 20 quid, without burner as they always seem to be and so I got it, spent a lot of time fiddling about and polishing it up and really came up sparkling and I have always loved polishing brass and copper and so set about bidding on other items until I bought a very sorry and broken hand made engine which I spent some time rebuilding and making good and that too is now working very well.

I spent a bit more on the third one as it came with a polishing tool attachment and that too got the dremel polishing using green bar, then autosol then finish off with brasso wadding and it gleams like a gold nugget.

I do want to attempt a home build and relearn my old metalworking skills so am keeping an eye out for bits and bobs to make a boiler with, I don't have a lathe or mill so everything I do will be hand tool or bought lol

All the best

Ian

Hi Ian, welcome to the forum

If you want to make an engine with just hand tools, buy some brass tube from here... https://maccmodels.co.uk/material...1-2-x-16g-brass-tube-12-long.html

End caps can be bought from here along with steam fittings safety valves, whistles, and bushes to suit....http://www.manormodels.co.uk/spares-Boilers.asp

Or try ITA for something a little more unique  http://www.ita-shop.co.uk/ourshop/cat_1283261-ITA-PRODUCTS.html

Also keep an eye out for K&S tubing and rod, or buy rod and bar (for the cylinder from Macc models above.

Steel for the base and firebox, again from macc models

What a lovely warm welcome, thank you

Here is a short and sadly silent or is that thankfully silent vid of my three, I was waffling away about polishing and what types to use and unbeknownst to me I had accidentally muted the mic hehe

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxE2aAHfijg

I would like to find out who D Weaver is who made the big copper one, it was a ahem to get it running right but now it does go well but I suspect it needs its steam line running under the boiler like the SE1/2's to keep the steam hot.

Thank you for the links too, I am in the process of drawing out my first attempt at a burner build, I have been looking at the home brew burner in the threads and got some really good ideas, not decided whether I will go for a horizontal or vertical boiler yet, the vertical looks a lot easier to do for a newb
