I'll be interested to see this and how much extra work if any needs to be done on the delivered parts, I've been toying with a self build from them myself but do not have either the tools or the knowledge to do anything other the bolt it together!

I thought the same but after a long chat with Dean at STW and another builder I took the plunge! I only had a few small hand tools and have bought a few items Dean recommended, the wheels look to be the parts that take most work. The tender looks pretty simple and the dry fit I did last night looks promising! It was the painting that put me off but my dad used to work for Rolls Royce and he's offered to paint it with me using Craftmaster paints so fingers crossed for a good finish!

Looking forward to this one - when it's complete, hopefully you can keep it inside somewhere? Perhaps lounge or dining room.......?!

As you know I'm not too far away from you, so if you need any workshop tools you're very welcome to borrow/use them here.

Regards, Alasdair

I think my wife might have something to say if this took up residence in the lounge! Someone mentioned a pillar drill might come in useful for any holes that need opening up so may take you up on your kind offer!

The wheels are really quite easy after they have been cleaned up. The worst bit for me (seriously!) was my tender. It was very fiddly and needed a fair bit of tweaking in the box pan folder at work.

Best of luck.. I gave up trying to sort out the issues with my 2" I can't say I had the best STW experience and I've paid a local, professional engineer who specialises in work on steam engines to sort it out.

I spent tonight working on the tender for about two hours and got both sides attached to the base/back plate without too much trouble, so things look as though they have improved!

The figure came with an engine I purchased a couple of years ago and the chap also built garden railways so I think one of those suppliers.

Surely that is most of the work.

This is going to be very interesting, thanks for posting.

I managed to get a bit of time this evening, even with my junior engineer helping, to do a bit more work and it's coming together really well although my fingers are getting sore with all these little rivet bolts!  The method is to put in a number of longer temporary bolts every five holes and tighten gradually to pull everything into shape, a soft hammer has helped where a couple of areas needed persuading and a tapered reamer to open a few holes out and then put in all the rivet bolts tightening those up and then replacing the temp bolts. Lots more to do!

That is a lot of rivet bolts to tighten.  It looks good though.

Progress is pretty slow but it's getting there!  All the holes were masked up today and in went a tin of petrol tank sealant, lots of turning to coat all the surfaces and hopefully it's done it's job; only time will tell as the tender fittings are not supplied with the current kit!  Next step is to get the top on, the tender divider and inspection hatch all fitted, only another 150 rivet bolts, and then time to do some painting.  I'm planning red on the inside and Burrell Crimson Lake for the rest!

Kit two is on its way so need to get cracking!

A trip to Craftmaster Paints today and we're ready to make a start at the weekend with some painting!
