Wilesco have made all sorts of things in the past, and still make plastic hooks and scoops, as well as non-steam toys. Other big toy makers, such as Bing, Marklin etc., also made non-toy things, let alone non-steam toys. If Mamod start branching out to non-steam stuff then good luck to them if it helps keep the bottom line out of the red. There is a precedent; they made a battery powered boat (which failed miserably, commercially). If they stop making steam toys altogether, then I will start worrying.

Photos as promised:

I understand it will have switches for on/off and forward/reverse as well as a speed controller. Price? Significantly less than a Roundhouse Little John.[/img]

That was Wilescos Business long before they made steam toys and its the second economic mainstay they have. I had a wilesco garlic press until I lost it, it was good quality.
I think nowadays its a good Idea for a company, especially steam toys, to have another card lets say another economic mainstay, if one marked going down, there is always a another produkt to manufacture. Its safer!

That looks nice!

A bit of detailing and some colour will make that a great attraction.

Will the production models be in Brass?

Cheers

I can imagine that a battery powered steam outline loco might raise a few eyebrows, but don't see a problem with a battery powered Diesel; there's definitely a market for a reasonably priced ready-to-run all-metal loco.

Having looked at the photos, I have a few questions:

Has the design been finalised yet, as there seems to be at least three versions visible in the pictures?

Has provision been made for easy R/C conversion?

Will the production version be constructed from brass? There seems little point unless it is to be soldered together.

Will it have a "battery tray" that accepts standard AA cells for example, or a built-in rechargeable pack?

Will a motorised chassis be available (as Roundhouse have recently done) for home builders?

I have to commend Mamod on branching out. I think.as long as it's tested and planned out well before the release. Then you'll be on to something.

It's got a great look to it. But I think that allowances for rc fitting at a later stage, or an option for it fitted would be a good step.

I look forward to seeing how it turns out, but please if you plan on rolling stock to go with it, please look at more realistic than the current (or nostalgic shall we say) range.

Just my two pence worth    I wish you the best for the new venture.

the photos show development.it is not designed for r/c at this stage, more a toe in the water.the battery  pack takes independent "aa" batterys which can be charged outside the engine or inplace via a recharger port. the chassis will be available for home builders.keep the questions coming
