Well, just generating some general chat here.

As the topic says. Well we're all buyers and keepers, but in general, do you buy an engine with intentions of always keeping, or it's always for sale at a price? Or buy, do up to sell on for a profit? etc etc?

I generally buy to keep.
In my early days of collecting, I bought a "SE2" but it wasn't. It was a SE2 boiler, but SE1 base/pipes. I was none the wiser, until helpful people here told me otherwise so I sold on for a good profit.

I bought a Wick type MM1, with no burner, then bought another for the burner with intention of selling on engine, but may keep it. Both cheap too.

Don't really plan on selling any of my other engines though. They're all keepers.

So overall, I buy to keep, 99% of the time

Bit more of a buyer and seller.

I tend to keep more these days! I used to get them, clean them and sell them on. Keep some rarer ones but slowly build up my collection from scratch

Used to make a decent enough profit, can't ever remember losing on anything

At the moment I'm a keeper, but being relatively new to the hobby I'm not sure where I'm going yet.

I love Bowmans so I might in the future sell some of my other engines to pay for more.

Not at the moment though.

Mostly keeper, although I have sold a few engines. I have a personal rule that if something doesn't get used, it's going. I have also swapped a few engines - sometimes you get an offer you just can't refuse.
On occasions I have "bought to sell", purely to raise funds, although in the current market that's not so easy anymore.
But....at the moment my collection's at a point where I love everything in it

That's for sure Lewis.

I'm not all that keen on my MM2, but will keep it. Only been used 3 times.

I had the plan and still would like to buy some simple wrecks like MEC1's, SE1a's, SE2a's, to do up/repaint and re-sell in OZ for a bit of profit.

But don't have the time.
