These are the latest happenings up at mamod
The piston valve is to be re-designed and made circular for the locos first, then if successful it may move on to the other range.
The new loco William is going to be totally re-designed and a prototype has been built. Changing appearance of course.
They've made a prototype twin cylinder piston valve but it was way way too powerful and it needs a good way of cutting back the power.
The designer for mamod has lots of new ideas but the company are reluctant to let him use them.
New mamods are selling very well, Forest sells 2 PV TE's a week! not including all the other models of course
Thats about it _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

"Too powerful" can't seem to understand that myself, just gear what ever it is down if it's too fast.
Unless the flywheel's ripping your finger off I suppose
But I hope the company does well and so is able to bring out lots of new models. |

Aye Phil from Forest Classics said about a twin model a while but was to powerful.
If one does come out im getting one.
The new cylinders sound good.
Do you think they will be doing anything with Harry?
I saw a few odd Harrys at the works. One was fitted with the SP6 engine frame and cylinder but at a angle like the earlier prototype _________________ www.steamyjim.piczo.com

Too powerful?
Just build it to a higher standard for sheet metal supports and whack a big flywheel on it and I'll have one
So 50 years from now the Brass Brick cylinder SP6 will be rare and desirable... Best buy a few now _________________

They are too powerful, my centurion if you open it up full power it goes MAD. So double the power would be overkill for sure! There is only so far you can go before it becomes too powerful!
You are right about the block piston valves they will be changing and seen in a few years as "rare"
Not sure about Harry Jim, I guess they'll eventually phase it out depending on how bad/well its doing. _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

The changes sound good! All they need to do now is up the quality control a bit and Mamod will be back on form!
Also has made me put off buying a Piston Valve engine off them until I see what they do to improve it _________________ Worrying the populace since '82' |

Maybe they ought to think about a new range of workshop tools. _________________ Les - Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternatives.

Or at least expand on what they already make. _________________ Les - Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternatives.

I agree there Les! Some metal working models would be good - lathe, milling m/c etc. _________________ Official Washer Supplier to the Forum!

I feel sorry for Mamod, I think they have a difficult job. I would not like to estimate the cost of development on a new engine, it would be frightening and also to consider all the safety regulations these days.
Then they have to market it world wide and at an affordable price. They have had bad luck with their stuff, but the piston valve stuff is just great - I would love to see a Piston valve Wagon, that would be cool on radio.
I also acknowlwdge that their quality is an issue and my prefference at pres would be an engine form Ian Grantham, super super quality, that really does it for me. I would like to see some new stuff, fresh stuff along with something from the past, if it can be done.
There is also a real market for the marine side of things now that Chedder has gone. I think that they could make a killing there with not much outlay.
Very best of luck to them - what about having a steam day at the factory!!! - they could market research at the same time!!

This does sound promising. Personally, I think the best thing mamod could do with the Piston Valve Models would be to have factory fitted O rings on pistons and glands. It would cost bugger all compared to the improvement in performance - how much would it cost to machine a grove in the piston and slip an O ring on? Even the glands look like they have space for them already.
But if they are in a position to be developing new models it cannot be too bad! _________________ It's a Mamod Jim, but not as we know it!

does this make all the square cylinder slide valve models rare now ?
where did you get the info from mm ?
also if they bring out a new sp6 guess who will be buying another
im gonna see if my sp6 can drive 2 full mamod workshops soon
and if they do eventually bring a twin slide valve stationary out ill be getting it striaght away _________________ The SP Range guy

Did you see at STIA: a tiny little MM1, but they had it driving a workshop, with about 5 tools in it. I couldn't believe it. Why I didn't take a picture / vid I have no idea.
It was in the big shed on the right handside as you walked in the doors. On the same table with the cable car I think. |
