Just spent a nice afternoon at the National Rail Museum. Sadly the two winding engines were out of order and nothing was in steam, but it was still a good day. We're going back in a couple of months to have a longer day there  and hopefully catch something steaming or working.

| Yep good old York. Even though i live about 10 mins away i haven't been in a while. Maybe i should go sometime soon. Did anyone else go to railfest a few years ago that was fun |

| Was that the 2004 one? That was my first visit to NRM, and because of all the special stuff there I never got to see the normal museum, which was the reason for going up yesterday. It was great - I love the smell of steaming engines |

Me too! I remember going to NRM in the seventies when it opened, and it was great then... but its even better now. Another good place for steamy smells in the area is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway between Pickering and Grosmont. Been there?  |

Not yet! I've done: Bluebell, Watercress, Bodmin, Spey Valley, Nene Valley (my local), Isle of Man and at least one other that I can't remember. |

One chap I was talking to on the GCR last month wasn't too keen on the NRM - proper engines have muck on them and pull things! He went to to say the more muck the better. Although I love the NRM some of the exhibits are lifeless display pieces. Engines are built to be steamed!! Just like Mamod etc . . .  |
