|
|
Well, I have seen these listed for sale on eBay.com for a mere $15USD and a few dollars for postage. I took the plunge and upon receipt yesterday I thought at first I'd wasted my money.
What arrived was a very small box...but upon opening I found good instructions, dozens of screws and nuts and a number of ver well made galvanized parts. This is intended to be used either outdoors attached to a post or railing or indoors as a static display. If searching for it on eBay...just type in miniature windmill or Aero windmill. There are usually several listed at all times.
What follows are still pictures of the assembled windmill which stands 17 inches tall. Round bladed part is 5 inches in diameter and it features brass bearings. The minor advertising on the vane could be removed with paint remover if offensive.
I plan to get a second and modify it with pulleys to run as a steam engine accessory...not a difficult thing from appearances.
AND, it is made in Geneva, Nebraska USA...not China
I heartily recommend this kit leading to a neat static display in or outdoors or as I plan to do...a modified version that will run off a steam engine.
Check out the video of it operating:

What a nice addition to the Temple, for little outlay!
It looks an awful lot like the windmill we have at Amberley for pumping water (when it isn't locked from turning ) _________________ Si

Bubba, after spending 2-3 hours (I got faster as I went along)...$7 for a pre-assembled tower sounds pretty good. It is not that it takes a rocket scientist, but rather the nuts and bolts are tiny, fiddly, easily dropped and the metal cross brasses are many!!! My guess is the pre-assembled ones might be pop riveted together as that would be a breeze.
Yup, I am going to get a second one and build it as well...then modify is so as to run via steam. I like the idea of using a concealed exhaust tube to drive the blade like a turbine...gosh that would be a piece of cake to do vs. pulleys and drive belts!!!
I might also play around with trying to replicate the Jensen logos and verbage with decal paper and make up a replica of the type Jensen's former sales manager sold. Reading up on the history and collector aspect of Aero Co., I can see how he might have had a hundred such vanes customized with the Jensen logo and verbage.
Well, enough blather...those with even a passing interest should give this a go...I would still rather put one together than buy pre-assembled, sort of a right of passage and I like N&B construction in my Mamod's and my windmills!
cheers,

Rog, that is brilliant.
They sell similar ones here in a shop, literally for putting outside. I never thought of using one of those linked to a engine. Great idea _________________

Rog,
I got one of those kits in the mail a few days ago and it is sitting on my desk (sort of in the in box). I must admit I did not realize it was a kit until it arrived as I did not read the description too carefully. Now to set aside some time to assemble it.
As for running it on exhaust steam, some of your steam will condense before it gets that far up the tube so you will be spitting some water and some of the remaining steam will condense on the blades and fly off in all directions. I THINK IT'S A GREAT IDEA THAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY OUSIDE.

Gil,
Good points on trying the steam output on the windmill blades OUTSIDE. I can picture a line on my ceiling!!
As for the kit...set aside at least two hours, maybe start a movie on the TV and have the kit laid out in front of you on a large flat surface. I arrayed the crossmembers in groupings...I think there were seven or eight different sizes. Instructions are excellent though I found it easier to NOT set the base cross members first as it suggested as an option. Have proper screw driver handy and either a long hemastat or needle nose pliers...you have to hold those nuts inside the structure and it was close quarters for chubby hands like mine!!
These ARE the exact same Kits once used to make Jensen windmill accessories...top quality in all ways. Enjoy!!
