Having recently joined the 16mm NGM, I was hoping to get this loco modified for running at our local group's meetings. However it is taking longer than expected.

As the local group is not really in favour of Meths fired locos, I took the opportunity to fit a gas burner that was previously fitted to an SL1K I'm repairing. The chassis spacer provided by IP Eng actually allows you to hold up the Meths burner, unlike the later ones that they and PPS produced. You can see it in the front right of this photo.

The chassis spacer is actually shorter than the standard Mamod/MSS spacer, and I had a problem with the axles binding. On checking the rear axle had a smaller back to back gauge set than the front axle, so punching the axle out from the wheels slightly, plus loctiting a coupling pin back in (it had been scoring against the chassis sideplates), had these wheels running freely again. I currently use a butane/propane mix gas, and even on the lowest setting this is too hot for this boiler and the water runs out before the gas. Just as well it is silver soldered. The gas tank fouled the regulator, and I found that the longer regulator fitted to a PPS boiler I have for another project is a different thread. So a piece of rod plus some tubing was soldered up to make an extended regulator, which now operates behind the cab back.

I got some white metal multi height couplings off ebay, and after fitting these with a 6BA threaded stud, these were primed and painted matt black.

2 cylinder covers that I've had in my spare parts box have been modified by soldering a piece of brass to the front, and after filing down the bulges on the inside of the bufferbeam where the bufferplate is fixed with 6BA screws & nuts, I've drilled these to be fitted by the same screws & nuts. I've removed the very amateurish rivet detail that was poorly punched on these covers, but my Milliput does not seem to be setting very hard these days (must have gone off). I managed to solder one up, and that is half way through being painted black. The other is in the photo above.

Following a link to a supplier provided in the Steam Launch Forum, I've found a source of 1/2" pressure gauges, and they will provide a syphon tube and banjo bolt to fit as well. This would be fitted onto the top of the water sight glass tube, and I was planning to share the pressure gauge with an IP Jane/PPS Janet project that I'm slowly working on.

Lamps irons and lamps were purchased from Brandbright. These have been primed, and await the purchase of some white & silver paint to finish. The lamp iron I glued to the top of the smokebox kept getting pulled off with all the manhandling, so that will be the last item to be completed.

There is just enough space for a driver from Modeltown, this one is one they do for the IP Eng Jessie or Jack.

I intend on getting a brass chimney cap and brass dome to cover up the water top-up valve. These are available from PPS, although Alan (Mamodevon) tells me that he will have them available from his new shop. He was hoping for a mid-April start, although I've not heard anymore on that recently.

And to finish this loco off, I will be getting brass nameplates from PPS, having finally worked out how to name my locos.

Not in my experience. On the one visit so far to my local 16mm NGM group session, all the locos used ran out of gas first. My Cheddar Iver does this, and if you look at the scanned instructions for the Mamod/MSS Gas burner here - http://modelsteam.myfreeforum.org/about8119.html you will see it states 'The gas tank should run out before the boiler runs dry'

I have found a local supplier with Butane only canisters, although sadly only the small size. So I'm going to try these to see what difference a cooler gas will have.

Thanks for posting the link to the PPS Janet review, but I've been aware of that one for a long time now, as it was originally posted on the PPS website as well (their link is now out of date and does not work).
