I was wondering if any of the oil I use on my gun barrels would work good.
I won't use WD-40, because it is not good for long-term use.
WD-40 is a water-displacing compound and works very good for that. But over time it does evaporate and it leaves a very thin layer of oil.
If you were to spray it often, it would work, but I am looking for long-term protection. |

I think that THIN would be desired. Gun Bore oil would leave it, well, oily. IMHO, leave it be. _________________ Your life is an occasion...Rise to it |

Yup WD-40 isn't really much of a protection for steam toys! _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

I've just never had luck with WD-40, so I never use it. It evaporates fast and leaves too thin of a layer.
I want to protect the bare metal in case I touch it while using it. |

I don't like the smell, and it's flammable _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

I still want to repaint the arms, but John, Les, and Richard won't let me.
I used photobucket's new picture editing thing to paint him up. I could have made it more realistic, but I don't have the patience. |

We are not stopping you, if we owned it ourselves then we would not paint it. _________________ Les - Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternatives.

LOL, I thought you had done them
I'd probably avoid repainting them.
Even here in the salt air and humidity, I'd probably try some vaseline for a coating.
There was a thing about using Linseed oil, in the Basil Harley toy steam book. I'd spot test it first to make sure it doesn't do any damage _________________

linseed oil gets gummy in time and more damage occurs when trying to clean it off. Best bet is to do nothing.
If you do decide to repaint, that just means that someone elses just becomes more valuable. _________________ Your life is an occasion...Rise to it |
