Tomorrow I'll be leaving for a week away in Whitby (to enjoy the famous northern climate!).

I plan to get over to the railway museum in York,  but are there any other steam related attractions I should be should be adding to my itinerary in that part of the world?

Not all steam related but...

Whitby is a great place. I went to Whitby Abbey last time and up the 100 odds stone steps to the famous chuch on the clifftop there with the box pews that are supposedly built from old ships timbers.

Has Dracula connections too. Wasn't he supposed to have landed in Whitby and sheltered in the churchyard there? I also remember a really good fudgestop on the street going up to the steps there.

The harbour is great and if it's a windy day it's fun to watch the small fishing trawlers roll and pitch around on their way out of the harbour. Plenty of good Fish 'n' chips and a good pint!

If I went to the North York Moors railway and wandered into the workshops...the door was open and I though what the hell! Bumped into one of the volounteers there, got talking and he gave us a look around the Nigel Gresley and footplate climb around on the other locos. Got a great view of one of the locos letting off excess steam after a days run and cleaning out all the soot from the smokebox too. He mentioned there being a club / bar frequented by the railway people and so had a few drinks there, then visited the pub opposite (I think "The railway tavern")for good pub grub and more beers, free internet in the pub too.

So makesure you talk to the volunteers about your steam interests and they'll probably be happy to show you some of the bits the general public don't see!

Make sure you visit York Minster too when you are in that part of the world too. The crypt is really interesting too as it's full of roman bits, parts of the previously built cathedral foundations and a huge piece of reinforced concrete block to underpin the massive tower.

Don't forget the steam bus 'Elizabeth' that runs around Whitby

You have to visit Goathland, home of Heartbeat

I'm back!   Had a great time,  wonderful weather+ nice place to stay, perfect holiday really.

The weather was so great that I didn't get round to visiting the National Rail Museum  (was saving it for a rainy day)  but I did visit the  NYMR at Pickering which was fantastic.

Various Pictures here:

.... enjoy your stay in Whitby, Mike! Beware, though, of Vampires ...  Part of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula (my favourite!) plays there. There's definately some Dracula memorabilia junk you can by there.
