Been there, done that and ordered nearly all of the available upgrades.
About to treat this sorry loco with a new copper boiler with regulator, uprated SV new 45mm cylinders and steel wheel, new centre buffers and a roundhouse lubricator and gas burner I already have.
It will also get painted red and become 'James'
Thanks for keeping the parts going or I would of never been able to finish this loco for my son James. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

Living in Scotland, I rely a lot on the internet for my spare parts.
So it is good to see another trader enter the market, and initial impressions are very good.
I have several Mamod & an IP Jane/PPS Janet project on the go. Just ordered some spares from Dream Steam, and after an e-mail confirmation of delivery, they arrived today all neatly packed in separate clear grip seal bags.
I appreciate that we all have to save the pennies these days and so shop around to get the best prices.
Dream Steam does offer several spare parts at very competitive prices, with a simple online shopping experience.
Why not have a look at his website - it’s free to look! _________________ Chris Cairns.

Is there a U.S.-based merchant of Mamod stock and supplies?
When they talk about how Mamod runs on O Scale/32mm gauge trackage, is it O Scale/1:43 or is it SM32 ?
I am coming from a scale modeler perspective, not a rivit counter.

Mamod engines are not based on any prototypes so it doesn't really fit any scales but we have talked about this before.
It is a narrow guage loco and would probably be classed as a bit smaller than sm32 locos.
I once sat down and took a guestimate of the scale and came up with around 1:20.3 for it but that is just a guess. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

| The Mamod Loco is a freelance design, based on small industrial locos the type that operated on the welsh slate quarries. It's similar in design to a small Kerr Stuart Loco, perhaps a fraction smaller. It's roughly 16mm scale, running on 32mm track to represent 2.0ft gauge. |

To me is depend on the track and context. For example, when running on SM32 track it looks like a small narrow gauge loco but when running on G1 45mm track it looks more like a standard gauge tank loco - or is it just my perception?
The scale was arrived at during the design phase based on two criteria. 1. that is must run on O gauge track, and two the size of boiler that was taken from a standard Mamod engine. These two factors led to the rest of the loco taking shape and becoming a 1:12 scale loco.
In reality, as it is not modled on any particular prototype, it is what ever scale you want it to be and are happy with, so long as it runs on your track. _________________ www.mamod-steam-railway.co.uk

| On the subject of Garden railways, theres two routes you can take, you can either try to model in scale an actual railway, basing the locomotives on actual prototypes, stock etc. You could also just build your own railway, not worry about scale and just base it on the fact that it's just a very small steam locomotive running on 32mm track! You can just build freelance rollingstock too then, in reality a lot of NG railways had their carriages built to suit their own loading gauge too so it is prototypical! |

Sounds good to me, so I think I go with the SM32 concept, since I am fond of the Welsh Highlands Railway.
Thanks,
