I actually like PayPal, BUT, there has to be a limit. Cash  when in person and Money Orders for those who have no banking should still be allowed.

Graham, this has been discussed before by your fellow countrymen, but I cannot locate the previous posting.

It seems that ebay have different policies on this worldwide, as it has not affected Germany yet. There are many ebay Germany items that I'd like to bid for, but most do not offer PayPal, but use a bank transfer, which I assume is cheap or even free within Germany, but costs us lots from the UK.

We are supposed to now offer PayPal as an option for UK listings, but I've seen some listings where it has PayPal listed, but the seller then states in the description that PayPal is not accepted.

One of our big banks is thinking of taking ebay to court about this.
Can't remember which one though.

I hate to say it, but the only ones that will gain anything in that instance will be the Lawyers.

However if there is a big enough reduction in the number of listings they might wake up.

It does still allow for COD pick-ups and doesn't allply to large sales like cars, houses etc.

Ebay are trying it first in OZ to see if they can get around section 47 of the OZ Trade Practices Act - restrictive trade practices, before trying to launch it worldwide.  They are claiming that buying with Paypal is 4 times safer than any other method of buying on ebay, and are trying to claim an exemption from the relevant section on that basis.

If you want to complain there is a section, on the ACCC web site where all these claims are listed.  As I said somewhere else, they can start the new process, whilst the determination is still being made, and can't be prosecuted for it, whilst it is under consideration.

Hopefully the pending class action by the bankers Association of OZ and the Reserve Bank of OZ will make them think again.

Until the determination is made theres nothing we can do.  Also remember if you sell oveseas this gives them two bites of the cherry as per my previous thread,

http://modelsteam.myfreeforum.org/about10683.html

One for thier original fee and a second when the money fro m the country of origin of the buyer is converted to US$ and possibly a third when the US$ is converted to AUD$.  The reson this happens is the Paypal's ccurrecy conversion rates are always 2-5 cents per dollar lower than the internation rate.

If we all don't complain via that ACCC web site, and they win, we only have ourselves to blame.

Cheers

Chris

Yeah I agree seven.mpd.

I don't think there'd be an issue if ebay/paypal didn't double dip. ie, they take commission for the sale and listing but that is fair enough, they have to make money

But it's wrong they also dip their hand into the paypal transaction, which they force you to use

I guess it won't affect me. I have no other place to buy or sell steam engines, so will be sticking with ebay.

The important thing for us to remember in OZ is make sure if you are selling, the item is sent registered/insured.
