And while you digest the text at the bottom of page 192 here's a quick video preview.
A little late in the day and we didn't have the canopy on straight but at least you can hear what it sounds like.

$80,000
But from the pictures you can see we still have a house, (or at least a handrail ) No, it is not a mint condition 1902 #8847.
It is rather special though, I spent nearly three months tracking it down and am very proud of it.
It doesn't seem to be well known, but in 2000, Marklin ran a 1000 copy, limited edition, reproduction of the #8847 - The Marklin 16021.
The reproduction is an exact replica of the original, right down to the hand painted miniatures and the music box. Mine is mint in the original packaging. The literature goes to great length to stress the use of all the same original materials and hand finishing. It comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The piece is exquisitely beautiful, I love it and it certainly is as close as I will ever come to owning the real thing.
They are very hard to find now, especially MIB. Two used ones were recently sold at a live auction in Europe for about $800 each, exclusive of 22.5% Buyers Premium and Shipping. _________________ Richard

That is definitely a tease but well worth it.
The next trick will be getting to run at the right speed so it sounds right. _________________ Les - Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternatives.

I know as I have tried, nearly had one for €93 with three minutes to go and then it went mad. _________________ Les - Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternatives.

Nick? is that you?
Seems that rather than Nick getting more patient we've all got more impatient! This isn't working out as planned _________________ Richard

The reproduction seems to be an incredibly accurate copy of the original. Points of interest noted so far:
Neither the original or the repro were designed to run on steam as pictured. The repro comes with an alternate pulley that will accept a driveband. The pictured pulley is hand crank only on both.
The original had large balls hanging below the canopy. The repro has bells.
The figures in the scalloped seats are magnetic. They can be moved around the carousel or to the static seats around the central column as desired.
The musical movement is no longer below the landing. Does anyone know what tune the original played? _________________ Richard

When the original is priced so high, most manufacturers will make minor changes to avoid counterfeiters from trying to pass the replica off as the original.
I like the accessories a lot, but do see where the speedy Steam Engines are too fast for realistic operations. _________________ Your life is an occasion...Rise to it |

Andrew is ready to go, he's bought the distilled water and fabricated a drive band that spaces engine and accessory appropriately.
I need to have the 'financial prudence' conversation with Val again.
Even non steam friends are urging us to run it but she is still concerned about the potential devaluation.
How much value does it lose being fired?
Maybe George Bush would make up the difference.
Were it not for the current state of the economy this would not even be an issue. _________________ Richard

Just my take on the fired versus unfired engine situation.
The engine was made to be operated, no operation, why make it functional. Just like the Model Fire engine that I recently bought, MiniSteam sells one for $20000 but I bought a non functional one for $17. If it doesnt work, why pay so much?
Now, there is a big difference between used and abused, if an item is used, but with the proper care, it shouldnt detract from it at all. Will it affect resale? Well, not that much I bet as the fact that it works probably adds to the desire to own it. I will gladly make you a non functional model and do an even trade if you wish
Lubricate but not over lubricate, drain it when done, and wipe it clean when done also. _________________ Your life is an occasion...Rise to it |
