Hey all,

As you know, I've been selling some engines to raise a bit of cash (quite a few still for sale though, see http://www.freewebs.com/odilon/forsale2.htm).

There's to things I'd like to do:

I'd really like one of these kits :

http://www.grahamind.com/tvr1a.html

But I'd also like to upgrade my SL1 loco with a new silver soldered boiler, regulator, etc from Dream Steam!

What do you reckon I should do??

Yes, if you have a boat for the marine engine get that, else upgrade the loco as the Mamod locos do run much nicer with the upgraded parts.

THe marine engine sure looks doable, I do not know how much you use the loco and how much you use the boats, get the one you will enjoy the most.

The silver soldered loco boiler and regulator is a great price from dream-steam. I'd go for that, and it'll be a fairly straightforward modification and will give you a nice running loco whilst you plan for the longer steam launch and marine boiler project.

I'm biased though as I'm into locos!

The problem with going for the boiler is it does not stop there. In order to get the best benefit from that boiler, you'll need a lubricator, some 'O' ring pistons or upgraded cylinders, and of course some steel wheels as well.

And you would be probably better off getting a second-hand IP Jane which has all that, plus it has the much better Cheddar Models boiler as well (at least in my opinion).

Look at MTA's bargain today at Merstham - £180.

I'd need more convincing that that boiler is much better than a Mamod one which has been soldered up properly & fitted with an uprated safety valve which can be screwed right down.

Another option, put the hard earned cash towards a lathe and start making your own engines

Hmm, very difficult, I think I'd leave the SL1 as it is, and of you wanted a more powerful engine go with what Chris Cairns suggested.

As you are already a marine enthusiast, I can see you building an fantastic boat based around that twin engine.

Cheers

Chris

I'd go for the marine engine too. It looks fascinating... presumably it could push a BIG boat?
