Early 60's? Boy, it's sure had a hard life.
Nice job on that base, Atticman. This ugly duckling might end up a swan, yet. _________________ -Chuck

Finally finished the base off, wasnt very shiny till the laquer went on.
Pic in the oven, baked to 140c, smell wasnt too bad
Now for the rest of it.
Needs end cap off to resolder whistle, solder in steam pipe, the frames arent too bad, but will see what they are like now the base is sorted |

Looks like a new base! Clever using the hangers, too. _________________ -Chuck

Finally plucked up courage and took the endcap off.
I was surprised how very easy it was.
This is the inside, a bit firred up.
and the cap- I notice there is more calcium on the ends, and wonder if this is the reason for the dezincification thats worst on end caps- maybe the heated part of the boiler keeps the calcium from settling so much in the middle and more on the cooler ends
The whistle was resoldered from the inside, easy except that the blowtorch kept going out- slight oxygen deprivation in the boiler perhaps.
I made the mistake of using too thick solder andd so there is a rim of solder as can be seen on putting back the cap.
Overall I am very pleased with my first serious soldering job- thanks to MM and odilon for their soldering guides.
Now for the frames, polish and reassembly- guess shell be ready for Christmas at this rate |

I love seeing progress on this one.
It's also great to see another member open up a boiler, maybe one day I'll try it. |

The boiler wasn't too furry on the inside and I wouldn't worry about that little bt of solder outside.
You can W&D it off but I've seen more on the outside of factory made boilers.
I was terrified when I first removed the end cap on a boiler, now I don't even think about it, except with my OZ engines with rolled sheet boilers , I'm still scared to open them but have no issues with desoldering bushes or pipes from them.
Your engine is coming along nicely and no need to rush. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

There is nothing wrong with the solder, I have done worse myself. _________________ Les - Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternatives.
