It's the same over here. Plus school food is usually mre expensive as well.
At my college, a burger will cost you £1.70, and chips £1. With the burger bun as hard as rocks...
Whereas down the road at the fish and chip shop, you can get a larger portion of chips and a larger cheeseburger for £2! _________________ Si

I had a good chuckle recently while reading an article about a young chef who pushed for improvements in the UK school lunch menus. This young fellow, who is popularly known as the "Naked Chef" on the US food and cooking channels, put together a series of "fine dining" menus for the schools. These could be implemented into the schools at no additional costs, would be tasty and healthy.
He was passionate about selling the idea to the authorities and made up sample meals for them all to try. Everyone raved about the food and the plan was adopted with a fair margin of victory. The menus were soon sent to the schools with instructions for preparation. All should have been perfect but for one glaring flaw. The food served to the students was.... well... nasty.
The cooks in the schools tried... honestly... they did. It seems they were just a wee bit weak in classic fine cuisine and advanced culinary techniques required and wound up simply guessing at procedures with most of the recipes. When in doubt... fry it crisp, boil it soft, or bake it well done.
I never got to read the final outcome of things, but I suspect the whole thing was a bust and dropped. At least I hope so. Deep fried bok choy with boiled brisket just seems a wee bit off the mark to me.

That'll be Jamie Oliver.....great chef, but for school meals? Nah.....
My daughter gave school dinners a couple of ties when she started going.....now I just make her a packed lunch every day. We bake our own bread, so I know she gets at least something decent that way. _________________ Stands the glass half empty,

... Jamie Oliver sure kicked off a world-wide cooking-hype. Being youngish, smart-mouthed and making the mere preparation of a steak sandwich turn into something like a rock concert.
This was completely new to "television cooking" and has since found many an epigone the world over.
He's also one helluva cook, a good drummer, keen businessman and loving father to two daughters that will one day suffer from silly given names (Poppy Honey and Daisy Boo - I mean, fahchrissakes!)
I did try out his recipe for Steak Sandwich (so American it had to be English) ... to die for! Happily!
Which sends me off to the fridge again ... _________________ Says Tom
