Not to mention, one should not forget the war of 1812.  We did NOT win that one!  The Brits came along and burned the entire eastern seaboard.  We lost thee for sure.  But for some reason, it is rarely mentioned in High School history courses.

Tower Bridge is modern and horrible! It's not as old as it looks. I don't know the exact date but I believe it's 20th C. Incidentally, it was originally hydraulically powered, from high pressure water mains. It's now electrically powered, of course.

Aye, its 188 something i beleive. It was orgionally steam powered to create the hydraulic pressure which was stored in an accumulator.

It's still hydraulicly power its just electricity is used to create the pressure

The steam engine still worked into the 1970s or 1980s i think

I've just found this:
http://www.towerbridge.org.uk/TowerBridge/English/BridgeHistory/

I didn't realise the hydraulic power was provided by steam. I assumed it came from the hydraulic power mains that were around in those days. I wonder why they did that? The docks must have had piped hydraulics, mustn't they?

It's older than I thought - just 19th C, not quite 20th.

They must of! The rest of the city was provided hydraulic power. Unless the docks produced there own like in Bristol

Maybe the reason Tower Bridge made it's own was to keep up with the demand and to have it in case the city's main supplies went down?
