The railways of Britain have always used eyectaching posters etc. to entice wouldbe passengers onto their trains. Here are a few examples of from the steam era:

A well knwon example from the GWR. I have this one as my MSN display pic!

Possibly the most famous railway poster of all time.

This one made by the LNER is just to stir up trouble between itself and the Southern Railway!

The one on the left celebrates the centenary of the Southern Electrics. The one on the right is trying to promote services to the South in winter.

This poster is promoting the prestigious Golden Arrow service.

I'll take a picture when I can, but my hallway is covered with nearly 60 framed postcard sized posters off the great era of railway advertising . . .

Jeez Mike. You are a true collector.

Must make redecorating a bit of a chore though.

I notice the old Forth Rail bridge there. Just as a matter of interest, have you ever been over it??

I have and it's quite an experience.

I don't know whether this practise still survives, but it was usual when crossing the bridge to try to throw coins out of the train window and into the water below. Then make a wish.

It used to be a standing joke that the maintenance crews depended on the money they picked up to supliment their wages.
