Having just replaced the wheels on my sons SL1 (due to the inferior manufaturing process as used by Mamod) & whilst in the process of rebuilding my kit SL loco, I thought about proving the claim in the 16mm forum re: adding between 160g to 180g of weight to the rear of the loco to 'balance' it.

So here's what I came up with :-

Front
Pistons/Regulator/and associated brass fixings (buffers etc) - 155g
Chimney - 140g
Total - 295g

Rear
Rear clip on cover/back - 42g
Rear beam inc buffers - 42g
Meths burner ('square' section only i.e no cups or pipework) - 60g
Total - 144g

So the difference in weight between the front and the rear of the loco is (in this instance) - 151g.

Which is about right, as the 16mm guide may have been based on the solid fuel burner.

I haven't taken into account the weight of the meths and/or the lubricator I plan to fit and with all weights/measurements, they're all subject to tolerence descrepencies. I've also assumed that the dome, whistle, safety valve, wheels & meths burner length i.e the pipe work & cups are all 'neutral' weight as they effectivley sit on the centre line and/or are cancelled out by each other ie whistle/safety valve.

What was also interesting was the wheel weight differences.

Steel IP wheels - 122g
Standard wheels (triangle stamped) - 82g
Standard Kit loco wheels (none triangle stamped/friction fit) - 78g

So the total weight of my sons engine including Steel IP wheels, Chase meths burner & uprated safety valve (but minus water/meths etc) was 1.12Kg.

To conclude, the folks on the 16mm forum know their Mamods

Darren.

A decent heavy coach can help keep the back end on the rails aswell!

Ive never needed extra weight on the back, also remember that the boiler holds water that will add to the weight and the boiler stops at the smokebox !

Nice bit of detective work Darren.
I've just run down stairs and weighed my loco on the kitchen scales (Don't tell the wife) and mine weighed 1145 grams dry weight.
Mine is 45mm guage so longer axles and guage 1 cylinder assembly has a bit more brass in it which would accoount for extra 25 grams.

I still havent got a complete circle of track but on my tear drop shape track I must say my loco looks pretty stable, guess the extra 13mm between wheels helps.

Once I have got a complete circuit may temporarily add the weight to the back end and see if it makes a difference.

That's a good point, as the stock 'log carrier' truck is the route cause of pretty much all my derailments.

Mind you, at full speed on my sons SL1 (steel wheels, uprated safety valve, lapped pistons/regulator etc), it literally flew off the track, as it was going that fast. So I'll be running it with a suitable load from now on.

Locos are the dogs dangles, well that and SE3's. So if you don't own an SE3 and/or a loco, you don't know what you're missing.

Me, I've got a couple of SE3, an SE4 & three locos

Darren.

Four loco's and counting for me now. I want to complete the whole set if possible. I've caught the bug well and truley.

They are definatly the best thing since sliced bread, well after SE3's!
