Well, she made it to Portland...

I brief thank you gos out to Logoman for pointing her out and Newsteamer dutifully for doing his homework ...sorry that you missed the time to bid...really

The boat arrived with the original box ( torn flaps and all) It is basically a "vacu-formed" boat. A very thin light-weight plastic body. The boiler has no safety valve, the engine is riveted to a small plastic base that is in turn glued to the bottom of the hull.The hull does have a crack in the bottom. One paddle wheel has a broken fin or bucket.

So this is how she looked when I un-boxed her:

So as I had mentioned before in the initial post there were a few details attend to -

1. A SV for safety

2. A solid hull- fix crack and strengthen with a fiberglass application

3. Replace the existing steel "paddle" axle with a brass shaft

4. Perhaps R/C rudder

5. Insulation under firebox for a longer life!!!

So here is the stripped down hull

The wood pieces for the boiler do add some rigidity to the flimsy hull, But I will complete the box for more strength before I add the fiber glass

I cut our some glass cloth - coated the hull - laid it out and pressed into place-- and then coated it --It is setting up while I write this

So here is the little Amazon steamer next to the recently arrived Elco PT Boat ( it is 40" long)

Ok - Steam valve- the little boiler is actually a 6 oz brass version of a juice can

The brass cap is a candidate to drill and make into a steam valve

Turn some brass rod

Drill the cap- add a spring and a Viton o-ring and a crude but improved cap that I may improve on later

I also filled the boiler with a boiling water / citric acid mix to clean out any gunk..

Glued the paddle back on the wheel and oiled the piston and engine. Fitted the steam line with some crimp bands to help hold them in place

Ok - come on resin set up on the fiber glass!!

You have been busy, the paddle steamer is a cute looking boat and the work you are doing is admirable.

The PT boat looks great as well.

That looks like a fun little project. You're turning it into something that should last, which is something it was never designed to be from the start.

Until she is revealed on my table tomorrow..

I installed the metal tray under the boiler, the ceramic insulation (this should catch any spilled meths while underway), the brass axle rod and paddles, the new rubber band pulley belt and new windows for the pilot house...

no appology neccisary as i know it has gone to a great home (atleast better that mine for a steam boat cuz i dont have anything to make an sv)
