First run of my newly aquired SP5. Note the exploding fuel. Am I supposed to be using solid fuel that dates from the 1980's ??

LOL the fuel is louder than the engine
It worked though. I have found that the Mamod fuel explodes more than Esbit too.

It looks good exploding like that but I think it is damp which is why it does it.

Two nice engines.

A question for Mamod - have you considered making a twin cylinder version of the SP6?

Are you happy with the SP5?

I want to have one next year.

I too think Mamod fuel tablets are more prone to explode if old or got wet than Esbit fuel. After a rather big bang of Mamod fuel in my STC-04 with burning parts flying all around the messy basement I use the Mamod fuel only outdoors.

The tablets surely got damp as I had a flooding in the basement but the Esbit lying side by side at the table above water level with the pack of mamod fuel also got damp and they did not (yet) explode.

Klaus I've only has the SP5 for a few days and this was the first run, but I very happy with it so far. I'd like to fire it up with an SE3 sometime, see how the two twins compare. I'll do another shakey video if i do and post it. I understand that the first edition SP5's are actually rarer than the SE3's, so good luck finding a nice one.

The Mamod fuel was still in it's sealed packet, so I don't think it was damp. I will treat it with caution next time I use it though.

Roly, I've often wondered why Mamod don't do more limited editions, I'm sure that if the quality is good enough, a lot of members would dig deep to buy genuinely good models. The modern series may be affordable, which is good, but they also need to do a collectors series like Jensen do.

Lovely stuff.....get yourself a meths burner - cheaper, safer and it'll run even better.

the old solid fuel will explode if damp. as all hexamine based fuel will.we have for a number of years had our fuel wax coated to ministry of defence standard.since then we have had no report of this problem

Thanks for the tips on the fuel, i'll stick to my newer stocks of solid fuel from now on... unless i want to create more special effects with the old stuff !

Wouldn't mind to get a meths burner for the SP5, as it would fit the SP6 I have too. I'll add it to my wish list behind the jensen, mamod pressure gauge, Blue Thunder Generator etc etc etc

Personally, I am disappointed when my fuel doesn't explode. It's more exciting that way.
