It's interesting to see the process like this Tony. Nice one.
What happens with the pickle when it's saturated? Is it recyclable? _________________ He who keeps his head while all about him are losing theirs, doesn't know how serious it is. |

It probably could be sent to a refinery to extract the silver but I will still use it, it has just been downgraded to brass and copper soft soldered items only now.
Works a treat on disolving calcification on stuck model steam engine parts, much quicker than vinegar with less chance of turning it copper looking. Can do in 5 minutes what vinegar would take an hour to do.
Once I started making silver and gold jewellery had to stop buying it ready made for my wife as I now know how much a mark up is put on stuff.
I can make a 9K solid bangle for less than they sell a 9K silver or copper filled bangle for.
Difference between solid and copper or silver filled is. Solid is only made from 9K gold while a silver or copper filled 9K bangle only has 5% of the total weight of the bangle made from 9K gold. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

I was planning on having this bracelet finished tonight excluding the buffing but I didn't quiet get there due to the fact the wife went to bed early and so I was banned from hammering to make the bracelet round.
The photo below shows the 3 rings soldered up, yellow gold on left, pink gold in the middle and silver on the right.
The pink gold's soldering wasnt one of my best efforts but as I wil be sawing through my solder joint on it once it is formed round it doesnt matter.
The next step is to make them all round on the bangle mandrel (see bottom photo) then reaneal the silver and pink gold bangles to remove the stress of me hammering them and then cutting them open again on the solder joint.
I then carefully twist them sideways to open the joint and one at a time put around yellow gold bangle, close up and resolder.

I can see why, but it seems a shame to solder something up, just to have to reopen it again.
How long will it take to polish up after it's all complete Tony? _________________ He who keeps his head while all about him are losing theirs, doesn't know how serious it is. |

Polishing wont take me long.
I have two buffing wheels.
An initial polishing wheel of stitched cloth and a burnishing wheel to bring it up to a high shine of unstiched cloth.
I use a different polishing compound for each wheel.
It should take me no longer than 15 minutes to polish.
It is just that it makes a mess and I dont have a perminate workshop so have to carry my buffing machine outside on the decking and polish there so can only do it during daylight hours.
Yes I have to solder them up so I can make them perfectly round then cut them open again to fit around each other.
Anealing again after making round is important as hammering puts the wire back under tension and if I didnt when I cut it open the joint will spring open by about 5mm making it hard to keep it round.
Guess how I learnt that.... All I can say is I'm glad I made a protype out of silver first as silver costs me about $8 to $10 a bangle the gold costs $170 a bangle. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

Here they are all knocked round.
The top one is the yellow gold and its solder joint has been cleaned up as that is the one I'm not cutting open again.
I've just anealed the silver and the pink gold again and they are sitting in the pickle at the moment.
Once they are clean I'll cut through the soldered joint twist them open sideways so I dont ruin the shape slip them over the yellow gold ring one at a time and resolder. Then its just clean them up, haulmark them and buff them.

I've cut through the pink gold and stirling silver bangles and looped them through the other bangles and soldered them back up and cleaned the soldering up and haulmarked them.
I just need to buff them now but as it is still 38.4 degrees C outside I'm waiting a couple of hours untils it cools a bit.
Couple more pics.

All finished.
The flash bleaches the colour from the gold a bit so in the photo there is not much difference between the silver, pink and yellow gold but in real life there is a nice colour variation.
The bangle on the left is the prototype all stirling silver one and the one on the right is the silver and gold one.
Now I need to figure out what to do with the all silver one.
Anyone want to buy a solid stirling silver bangle to impress the other half or as a peace offering as you've just spent next weeks rent on a Bowman? _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm
