I went for a crawl under my house today. Found lots of spider webs a mummified lizard that was about 60cm long and a can that appears to be empty of Dieldrin. Now I'm going to have to find out how to dispose of it as I dont want my son finding it.

He wouldn't want it just worried when he gets a bit older and playing uner the decking as kids will and finds it.
It's an insectacide that does not break down and its use has been banned in most of the world since the late 1970s and is poisonous to pretty much everything including humans.

Not many spiders just loads of webs, I dont go under my house very often if I can avoid it.
In fact that section of my house is the first time in the 5 years I've lived there that I've gone under it.

Going under your house? Sounds pretty funny

Yes but not until tomorrow as its 11pm here now.
I carryed the remains out on a stick and tossed it down the hill to fertalise the bush.
Its very much mummified only the bones and stin left really but its showing off a nice set of really sharp teeth.

Lots of houses in the UK have cavities under the floor, most wooden floor houses do. When I worked for British Telecom one house I opened the trap door up in the cupboard to get under the floor and I had to get one section of my big ladder to get down. The ground was over 7 feet lower than the floor!!!
Another house I did work in a few days before I got there the plumber went under the floor to install radiator pipes and found to jewell encrusted very old arabian sword that had been hid under there!!! Now thats what I call a find!

We don't usually have crawl spaces here, just basements. Our house is brand new, not much under it!

News houses in OZ dont have crawl spaces either as wood is too expensive, cheaper to just have a cement floor.
But we also dont have basements

If the can is empty, I would probably just throw it in the bin (not recylcling part though).
If it isn't the council should organise removal of it for you as it was once a registered product, and quite common.
Failing that, you could ask the EPA as they usually handle such disposal of stuff
